I used "utopia" jokingly, since UBI isn't the cure for all that ails an unjust society. it has the potential to be helpful, though.

another perspective

Many of the changes to the world order that have been slowly creeping in will now be accelerated, Dion Rabouin writes in Axios Markets.

"History is now on fast forward," Robert D. Kaplan, managing director at Eurasia Group, said during a teleconference hosted by the CFR.
Why it matters: There will likely be a retrenchment of globalization and international cooperation combined with further cementing of a winner-takes-all climate, in which the biggest and most powerful companies and countries bowl over and eliminate smaller competitors.

This is "globalization 2.0," Kaplan said.

not very encouraging...

only to be expected though. let's be realistic. the big boys are plotting their next move as always. i doubt they're thinking 'maybe it's time to stop with all this money and power shit.'

What I'm saying is that the phrase "everyone is rich" can't mean anything in terms of money cos it's intangible, its value is relative to everything else and how much everyone else has. However, I think that if everyone had whatever place they wanted to live, had enough food and more of whatever types they wanted, and a number of other tangible luxuries, then you could make a case that everyone was rich. The phrase makes sense in the latter case, not in the first. So I'm not saying money will disappear, I'm saying that the phrase "everyone is rich" can only make sense if we are measuring wealth in ways other than money. I'm not predicting it will happen - or won't for that matter - I'm not making a prediction, just saying what the phrase must mean if it's to mean anything.

Will be curious to see how this pans out. They never had the BCG in italy or the US.

More “striking” evidence has emerged that the BCG vaccine given to counter TB may provide protection against Covid-19 and significantly reduce death rates in countries with high levels of vaccination.

A study of 178 countries by an Irish medical consultant working with epidemiologists at the University of Texas in Houston shows countries with vaccination programmes – including Ireland – have far fewer coronavirus cases by a factor 10, compared to where BCG programmes are no longer deployed.

This translates into a death rate up to 20-times less, according to urologist Paul Hegarty of the Mater Hospital, Dublin.

Their “correlation” study, expected to be published shortly by PLOS journal, is largely a statistical one and comes with caveats because of possibility of confounding factors. But it is more comprehensive than an initial one conducted in New York, which prompted a scaling up of clinical trials on people with Covid-19.

To reduce the possibility of error, the researchers re-evaluated cases during the course of the pandemic and made country-by-country comparisons including between Ireland and the UK, Mr Hegarty said. “We did not expect to see such a marked difference.”

“Over the 15 days, incidence of Covid-19 was 38 per million in countries with BCG vaccination whereas the incidence of Covid-19 was 358 per million in the absence of such a programme. The death rate was 4.28 per million in countries with BCG programmes and 40 per million in countries without such a programme,” he added.

So maybe the "up to" in the first bit means that that isn't an overall average? That there was some place where the death rate was that much lower... but presumably most of the others were not so good. I guess that could make sense... the first quote above applies to individual country averages and the second is an average of those averages?

Worrying amount of people turning anti-vax and buying info conspiracy theories at the moment. You'd think at this time when reality is really biting people would turn to something with a bit more authority than a meme but it seems memes are extremely powerful these days.

One thing that particularly sticks out is Trump continually banging the drum for this "cure" - all over you see people producing more and more "evidence" that it works - despite the repeated denials of his own medical experts. Another thing where his lies crash into reality and it costs lives. Saying "I always knew it was a pandemic" is one thing but in a sense it doesn't affect people - it's just transparent arse-covering - but people insisting on this are risking their health and others. I suppose the narrative they are trying to set up is that Trump produced the cure but the deep state held it back and killed everyone. These are frightening times.

Donald Trump was warned at the end of January by one of his top White House advisers that coronavirus had the potential to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans and derail the US economy, unless tough action were taken immediately, new memos have revealed.

The memos were written by Trump’s economic adviser, Peter Navarro, and circulated via the national security council widely around the White House and federal agencies.

Trump just comes out of this looking worse and worse every day. Is there any way he can avoid jail once he stops being president? I fucking hope not, the guy is a murderer, it's clear as day. A mass murderer in fact.

On Sky News they are saying there is a glimmer of hope in the UK. The number of deaths has increased (obviously) and the number it increased by was largest yet, but the amount that that increase was larger than yesterday's increase had slowed. That's the second derivative of the growth against time curve decreasing I think.
It's like saying, if we were in a car driving fast then the distance we have driven is increasing, and the speed at which we're driving is also increasing, but the amount of acceleration is decreasing. Of course, if acceleration keeps decreasing then eventually it will become negative, and then the speed will start decreasing, and eventually reach zero and then the distance will stop increasing... I guess it's something.

I think that gradient is measured over a few days, it's not just one smaller increase I should say, they think that there is a pattern there.
