This is just a guess but if you put a peg in the number at the bottom and another one in the numbers in the circle then that will pinpoint the day and the month no? I guess you can move the peg on one square every day manually - as you used to do with those desk calendar things - and it will always be the right day won't it?
Also I suppose you could like hang reminders from various other pegs in various other holes couldn't you?

yeh that's what i thought too but i couldn't see what use that has. i guess it only makes sense when you're completely cut off from the world and there is no other way to establish the date.

You could hack some leds and an arduino or something to make it into a retro timepiece sculpture

Really it's only one level above the prisoner counting the days by scratching tally marks on the cell wall.
But they used to have them in offices and stuff long after actual computers and stuff existed. Now you've made me think about it that is actually really weird. The only thing I can think is that an automatic calendar is a lot harder to programme than a clock cos each month has a different number of days and the number of days in a year can also vary. It's not a repeating thing in the same way, you need to set it to the unique actual date if you want it to be right forever - does that make sense?
