Boris Johnson signed contract giving Dominic Cummings 'jurisdiction' over government projects

Dominic Cummings asked Boris Johnson to sign a contract giving him special powers in Downing Street, The Telegraph has learned.

Although employed under the lowly title of "assistant to the Prime Minister", Mr Cummings is understood to have a special agreement, believed to carry Mr Johnson’s signature, spelling out his authority over special advisers (SpAds).

It also confirms his jurisdiction over other government projects such as ARPA, the Tories’ pledge to recreate the United States’ Advanced Research Projects Agency in Britain.

The revelation underlines the extent of the power wielded in Number 10 by the controversial former Vote Leave campaign director, who was once described as a "career psychopath" by David Cameron.
No.10 accused of using special advisers to circumvent civil service recruitment rules as job website launches

Downing Street has been accused of attempting to use the hiring of special advisers as a way to circumvent civil service recruitment rules after the government launched a website intended to centralise appointments of ministerial aides.

The website, www.spadjobs.uk, was launched yesterday with the aim of attracting people from the corporate world to take on roles as special advisers in government rather than those who work in and around Westminster.

It follows a call by Boris Johnson's chief adviser Dominic Cummings for “weirdos and misfits” to apply for roles alongside him in a bizarre job ad posted on his personal blog.

Shub-Niggurath, Please
Sounds like reports that we've already seen peak Cummings are a little, uh, premature.

I've started reading the Tetlock book. On the face of it, there does appear to be something to it - political forecasting has been almost entirely voodoo so why not try to do something better? But of course, how such forecasting is used is obviously crucial....hypotheses are themselves not formed particularly rationally. But I do like the idea of moving the conversation forward from pseudo-Austrian economics which is still a significant driver in right-wing thought (Javid is a Randian, as is Liz Truss).

I can't help feeling the crew-neck t-shirt under v-neck jumper is deliberately terrible. He tries a bit too hard to look like he doesn't give a shit.

There’s a tendency to think everything these manipulators do is clever calculation, I think the choice to wear casual clothes might be part of that, but the stylistic choices are the things he thought were cool at 28

He reminds me of certain people i know who have utmost confidence in their intellectual capability, and are willing to defend it. And who love talking about it endlessly.

I thank my lucky stars we don't have someone like that in the trump White House. most everyone there is either a self-concerned grifter or only moderately competent (or both), we'd be in much deeper shit if someone shamelessly cunning (instead of just shameless) were there. thought about this yesterday: can you imagine if trump had dick Cheney as his VP?

What about Stephen Miller?

miller falls into the moderately competent camp. that wall would be built and we wouldn't have had one brown-skinned immigrant since 2017 if he were ruthlessly cunning.

Look at the tags in the baked beans thread. But I dunno who added them so they're actually probably not true
