some of it is really dull but some of it is far preferable to kuido or whoever, the right amount of melodic synth texture over stepper rhythms. melodic dub fast techno/dnb crossover, if you will.

huge great echoing gong thing.

what attracts me to this stuff more than contemporary dubstep is that it is accelerated dub almost. so you have these bleak somber drones (when done right) along with this sensation of things speeding up, or constantly moving. even though most times it's a halftime of 170.

this is the kind of thing where one ASC album is enough. honesty, it's one of those genres where you seriously don't need more than one. interesting stuff, excellent sound design, but largely doesn't progress. and that's ok, to approach a style and do it perfectly, mitigating the need for progression. but kind of a dead end. a cool sounding cul de sac.

hardcore goes Coil, is how i thought of it.

my favourite artist from the staple is unquestionably Yu Asaeda. out of Japan.

strong dystopian basic channel in hell vibes on that one.

sure, but you only really need waveform transmissions vol 1-3 for hard techno, a few keith Hudson records for dub. etc.

I have one ASC cd and like it. but I don't need more than that. unless I'm missing something, perhaps third can enlighten us. or me, anyway.

and...is something wrong with that? diminishing returns from excessive digging.

Yeah, it's stuff I admire in short bursts but can't really listen to for long.

i would agree with that. one cold winter morning can turn into an endless drab, and there is a lot of halftime that if it is asc or sam kdc or von groll or whoever, you wouldn't be able to tell who produced it from a blind test. So thats all a fair point.

what i am interested in with this stuff is the approach it opens up into the subterranean depths, if we're talking universe formation. for instance you can mix it with stuff like this, shift up by 10-15 BPM.

reminds me of a youngsta set. first 10 minutes are awesome, the next 20 minutes are ok, then I fall asleep. but I'm an old codger.

of course Amit is the daddy of this sound, much harder and techno-based. really opens up approaches to go into double time mixing with kickdrum hardcore or whatever.

very industrial as well, not in the sense of EBM but abandoned storage facilities and warehouses.

sure what I'm trying to open up with this thread is not a defence of the sound or the nights around it, but the methodology it brings to the table. arguably not many people have explored its full potential in a dj/set context to hybridise with similar subterranean sounds.

I like the momentum of it. The half-time thing at that tempo gives it a floating feeling, you get the thump of the kick and the loop feeling like it's carried along by the bounce before it comes back in again -- like watching a sprinter at full stride in slow motion.

this is what attracts me to the approach. the death of rave. it's hauntological in the darkside sense of the term. this huge great bulking machine chewing up all the hallucinogens, all the stimulants and all the potentials and then all to disappear back into basically the revitalisation of the corniest aspects of eurodisco - 2010s 90s pastiche house.

it's just a shame so much of the music is snore inducing, but then that's the case with a lot of electronic music today.

There's something "scientific" about it to my ears. It makes me think of particles and molecules knocking around under a microscope -- engineer's music.

That strain has always existed in dnb for years. so I wouldn't be surprised. there's a kind of tactility to it, but not in the sense of banging acid or whatever. more laboratory gloves and safe masks. genetic engineering.

this is of course the best record of that axis of sound. like autechre goes dancehall with spurts of squelchy bassline that trigger heart palpitations. years ahead of most deconstructed club still, esp when the bassline starts eating itself inside out.

Yeah, see what you mean. Reminds me of some of the stuff on Incunabula. One of the better tunes I've heard of this stuff.

im still a bit divided on the instra:mental stuff but love this one, the miniturised percussion with that little scraping sound that sometimes comes in. quite housey as well which is something u don't get with this sound so much.

this one isn't halftime but it starts off with that dragged through hall of mirrors feel only to commence into a gangsta hardbop breakbeat workout.

the strangeness of dub etc...
