Stray thoughts under partial quarantine

Was also thinking about zoom and how you can't have two convos going at once in a room of a few people, something that people keep moaning about.

For all we think of digital replacing real life all sat in the pub, this is the crux tech challenge?

text/chatroom doesn't quite work, cos it's linear and can't spread horizontally as well as top down, to get that sense of overlapping dialogue.

but it's still way better than voice... we're gonna have to start using left ear/right ear or something.

also a weird juxtaposition with work zoom: you are physically isolated from work colleagues for 10 months, yet daily/weekly zooms give you a look into their personal side that you'd never know otherwise: inside their homes, their tastes in furnishings; SOs, housemates and/or pets occasionally walking by in the background. further apart, yet now also knowing much more personal detail.

Spatial audio would work. I bet there's an algorithm that could optimise on the fly spatial separation of voices, both on x- and z-axes

I'll quote myself talking to my mate Woops here we go

it's way worse with the rain isn't it. Can't go and out and do anything. Pub just leads to misery and remorse. Everything shut. Can't work. I'm not enjoying myself really.

They feel grim. Bad energies, fears, paranoia, desparation, swirling around, you get caught up in it as soon as you're drunk too.

It's especially bad if manned by staff who are scared of the virus: you know they don't want you to be there and you also know that they're only there and open because they have no other options.

I was in a cheerful country pub last Friday for a meal with my wife and son. Yes, we had to wear masks to get to the table, yes there were hanging sheets of plastic between tables. But there were also some regulars at the bar bantering away. Then the police turned up, masked up and notebooks ready. They'd had a report that social distancing was not being observed and they had a good look around. Very weird. But they fucked off fairly quickly without closing the place down.

Lot of stasi about.

Me and woops were out by the river yesterday and everyone over the age of 15 had a drink in their hand. Two old women wobbling arm in arm collapsed next to us and smashed their skulls on the iron railings. This was about 3pm. We just ignored them of course.

is not like other people
there was also a stronger police presence than usual. plain clothes officers wearing police vests. on guard against people smoking cannabis.

“People will think ‘I’ve had an awful year and I want to make myself feel and look great’. Let’s just slap on loads of foundation and lipstick.”

constant escape

winter withered, warm
Theres been a breach in the household, so its quarantine squared now. Hunkering down in the inner sanctum. I might take up my externalization practices again, making notes and diagrams and attaching them to the walls, waltzing with the madness, taking turns leading it, rather than being dragged along.

Drinking will probably increase, but I've enough of a shock absorber installed for such a blow. Metastable. Could be an opportunity to properly define "complexity magic" and do some intensive research for a change. Wine-fueled, mind-splitting discourse benders, which I only got a taste of in my last semester of college.

Also an opportunity for more rigorous meditation. Anyone have advice for sessions over sixty minutes? I only ever got to fifty, so I've got quite the stretch of ground to cover there.
