Sense of Humour?

That's why HH is a guilty pleasure, lack of gravitas.

How does sense of humour work in music then?

generally it's not a good thing - there are no straight up joke songs that should be taken seriously, by definition.
but i think its importance is often unrecognised and maybe hard to acknowledge, A lot of the contrasts that make up the beauty in nuumic music use it, perhaps obliquely - those exquisite moments in jungle are when you move away from the machine/body music and it becomes humanised with like a cartoon voice, speeded up snippet of lyric or film vocal caricaturing gangsterism, arch and somewhat arbitrarily bringing character to the tune
that raver's broad ecstasy grin when the tune brings in the ironic italianate piano, or the filched soul lyric

even to the point of stereotyping, snatched rastafarian samples adding levity to white electronic music,
of course there's a lot of obvious and intended good humour in grime, hiphop, reggae, where else...?

It's tricky. Like, a sense of humour, yes, but comedy music, that's a definite no. That's why Frank Zappa (sorry patty) is banned.

Comedy works against the reverent attitude and a lot of what we seek from music is that kind of reverence, emotional sincerity, full blown attacks of 'spirituality' etc

It undercuts belief in itself and its own pose and posturing and that is usually a bad thing.

The beauty of Zappa is the contrast of the virtuosity juxtaposed with the absurd. Same with George Clinton and all that gang. Sly Stone treads similar lines but in a cooler, dissensus friendly way. Not as hairy and sweaty. Hiphop managed to pull this off pretty well. Endless 80s outfits, Slick Rick, Kool Keith & Ultramag, then in the 90s Y'all So Stupid, Tribe, Gravediggaz. That stuff still manages to put a smile on my dial to this day. Some of my fave HH.

Someone recently referred to Pynchon as the "Frank Zappa of literature" and it irritated me because they're probably right but I hate it.

Yeah comedy as primary mode is awful All agreed here but Sufi is right that the obscene and cartoon aspects of hardcore and jungle accentuate the exquisite bliss. Whereas a lot of of recent dance music feels to cool or solemn and lacks elements of surprise and subversion. And agree with luka on the subversion undermining conviction or pathos being a bad thing. Jungle is a great example, plenty of soul and funk and Motown has a joyous celebratory humour, Parliament, Curtis mayfield. Giddy flourishes and Singing with a big smile on the face. Aphex springs back to mind as someone who balances humour with melancholy aspects

I've always found the weird breakdown in the middle of Jungle Boogie really funny. The bit where he sounds constipated at 2:16...

I'm talented, yes I'm gifted
Never boosted, never shoplifted
I got the cash, but money ain't nothin
Make a million dollars every record that i cut and--
My name is special ed and i'm a super-duper star
Ever other month i get a brand new car
Got twenty, that's plenty yet i still want more
Kinda fond of honda scooters--got seventy-four
I got the riches--to fulfill my needs
Got land in the sand of the west indies
Even got a little island of my very own--
I gotta frog--a dog with a solid gold bone
An accountant to account the amount i spent
Gotta treaty with tahiti cuz i own a percent
Got gear out wear--to everyday
Boutiques from france to the u.s.a.
And i make all the money from the rhymes i invent
So it really doesn't matter--how much i spent, because, yo
I make fresh rhymes--daily
You burn me--really?

Someone else I like who balances the goofiness with the bliss but is uncool around here (apart from version?) is oneohtrix point never. Strangely ignored in Simons conceptronica bit. “The dumber the thing is, the more excitement I get from imagining a very complex world of truth around it,” he also said something about not liking art that’s a big too sure about what it is which connects with me

I'm friends with two obsessive zappaphiles he's their God and both of them grew up in environments where there too much reverence and Zappa gave them permission to take the piss, deflate, sneer, broke apart the conspiracy basically.

I'm nowhere near a zappa 'head.' I mostly use him here to ruffle feathers. I do like some of it though. Finding Joe's Garage and Shiek Yerbouti in my mum's record collection as a kid was an eye opener. Fear and Loathing on her bookshelf. A portal, a new set of forbidden fruits.' Oh shit, adults can be like this?!'

These two have the most in depth theories about an apostrophe and so on. He's their James Joyce. It's not just the music, it is the music, but it's much much more than that.

i have an early memory of my parents saying they'd heard zappa had an iq of like 180. i probably make that memory up, i'm not 100% sure they'd know who he is. but that always shaped my perception of him lol. maybe they were talking about someone else.
