in the states beginning around 15-20 years ago, every kid started getting a trophy in the youth leagues. they didn't want to traumatize kids by deeming them losers. the social stigma too much to bear for a five-year old, I guess. we got even softer as time went on, no wonder the heartland rebelled and rallied around strongman Trump.
I grew up getting participation trophies and felt they were more a mark of shame than anything else. Always made of shitty plastic. And it wasn't that everyone got participation trophies, it was everyone that didnt win. A reminder and testament to your failure. Thank goodness I was such a cool, miserable child.
yeah, that's true, but most kids are probably not aware enough to think that at the time, it's only in retrospect that they feel the shame. I wonder if the participation trophies are also partially for the parents, a misguided attempt to help them deal with their loser child.
