How can we learn to adapt and "shed" these notions, without it feeling like succumbing to some bleak beast? I think it's possible. Maybe it involves tapping into some kind of collective mind, the swarm entity that actually benefits from the passions and trials of certain rebel figures. That is, instead of identifying as the vaccine, the purpose of which is to dissipate and make the body stronger. From this swarm/body perspective, not only is the dismal reckoning sidestepped, but the rebel's nobility is actually preserved.
Yeah collective and anonymised creativity has a certain power, always interests me. From UR to Anonymous
Artistic integrity must be difficult because you have to resist the seduction of your own image reflected in the mass. Deluded by your own importance. This kind of links up with what i was saying on the other thread about devotional art vs today’s career artist. Our current idea of the individual artist can be limiting, boring. maybe its something we need to move beyond for art to get odd and dangerous and transformative. Collectives are one route.
I’m now thinking about the rebel icon as a means of control, there’s that idea that conspiracy theories are propagated as an effective way to squander rebellious energy on a load of mystical bullshit, energy that otherwise might go about understanding and overthrowing complex systems of oppression. A lot of this energy spins around the focal point of hero and villain stories, evil men, great men of history etc. It’s a sticky and simple form of morality, very effective, we see it play out in scapegoating, identity politics, and how people think about racism
