If you could do it all again

What would you do differently?

Lately I've been thinking that I've essentially been making huge mistakes both personally and professionally since circa 2003. (Often the mistake has been not to make a mistake by actually doing something. I've sat on the pot, not shitting.)

no good can be had from ruminating on past mistakes, 1000s of people have said this over 1000s of years

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

As it happens, I just read this in Stanislaus Joyce's "My Brother's Keeper":

"I have seen a dozen or so cuttings from Cork daily papers containing flattering notices of Mr. Joyce's performances in various comic parts. Out of vanity [my father] preserved them for years, and lived, like his son, on the memory of a youth of promise. The dearest of all things in Ireland is the memory of the past."

i bet you wish you had joined in with mega ritual last night don't you? dont worry, theres another next week. i feel like ive been bathed in pure ass milk

This is the crux of the problem. The divergent time streams bifurcated there. The fallen and the chosen, the saved and the damned.

I believe it was in the Pollan psychedelics book that I read that the ruminating mind...

yes that's true, past as spur to present action is ofc very important. i truly believe that you only learn from mistakes. but i'm saying dwelling on past without concomitant present action is pointless

My life is essentially an accumulation of mistakes. Eventually you learn to understand their purpose which doesn't stop you making them, but does help the process of mitigation. It's called maturing, Corpse.

1. i would have either studied art or would have studied nothing at all. i feel like 90% of the work that is out there, let's just call it office work, doesn't require an education at all. so why go and spend money and time on getting a master's degree. i'm surrounded by genius talents here, all with good education and titles, and all we do is look at excel sheets all day long.

2. i would have putten more energy and effort in the people that showed a romantic interest in me, or better put, i would've communicated my feelings more obvious and stronger instead of taking everything for granted and looking very nonchalant and phlegmatic.

i think the only time this dwelling, the lament can be useful, is if you take it all whole, all of your past, including the boredom and grief and missed opportunities and alchemise all that into what you want to create now. that's what all the best people have done

is not like other people
whenever i think about this it occurs to me that to do things differently i would have needed to be someone quite different, in which case it wouldn't be me doing it all again, so the question kind of disappears in a flurry of free-will type debates.

but basically, listen to shiels

I guess you've got to play the hand you're holding and not worry about how you ended up with something much shitter than you could have had.
