Everyone seems to be either reading him or planning to atm, so might as well have a thread. Unbelievably bad hair.

Very into walking. Catalog and Woops will be pleased to know he was very into walking. Once rose at 2am to walk 30 miles to have his breakfast somewhere 30 miles away.

woops

is not like other people
that makes it sound like he walked 30 miles only to realise he was going to have breakfast back home (?)

Dickens populated The English Imaginary more than any other writer. As you walk through the towns and villages and empty places of the English Imaginary you will meet Dickens' creatures everywhere.

I read some weird thing a while back with some guy trying to push this idea of a psychic link between him and Kafka.

Would the Great English Novel, if there is such a thing, be a Dickens novel?

They are all dressed in Victorian period costume. Malnourished boys with shining eyes and pale, translucent skin. Bumptious, fat fingered factory owners. Quiet, self-effacing girls with neatly combed hair and unassuaged desires.

I only read my first Dickens the other day but he's so present in our minds that reading him is almost superfluous

I've read Hard Times and I think that's it. I borrowed David Copperfield off someone, left it on my shelf then gave it back unread years later.

Humanist, compassionate observers of inhuman worlds. Sympathies always with the little people and the downtrodden. Moralists inveighing against the rich and the hard hearted.

The Wire was often described as Dickensian. There's even an episode called 'The Dickensian Aspect'.

Dickens also the novelists novelist. The one they all revere. All the serious ones in any case.

he invented a London that is still, in some way, THE London. The archetypal London that overlays and undergirds all the merely provisional Londons.

Dickens is something you should spend your whole life reading. Start as a child and never stop. Read and reread till you're old and grey and bent double

There's a thread from 2016 where you say you've never finished a Dickens novel or Gravity's Rainbow. Now you've done both. Progress!
