Spot on. That’s the intersection. Stacks of people seemed to have opted into Prime and Netflix during lockdown, where beforehand you’d do the 30 day trial, fuck it off just before the deadline and skip into the sunset of eternal capitalism. Maybe they introduced Covid? Hmmmmm.
Same with kids and time. Sometimes there isn’t the time to make full use. Didn’t know about Criterion’s service. Working lunch so will have to have a nose. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a bunk film where their title is concerned.
Monthly perhaps? Time excludes so much. Maybe put a list of watched, want to watch but haven’t and recommendations together. The list Craner put together is something I added to a word doc of ‘when your life is your own and hopefully before you die you’ll watch these’ flicks and documentaries. A few curveballs are good, films you maybe wouldn’t have watched but did because someone else chose it.

I think I subscribed to BFI but then found you had to pay extra for all the ones I actually wanted to see, is that right?

I find it really hard to commit to watching something when I could watch literally dozens of other things (and that could be lowballing it) instantly.
The way I fool myself is to start watching something "just to see what it's like". 9/10 times I'll end up watching the whole thing.

With most films I find that it's very hard for me to pay attention for the first 10-20 minutes, then I pass that point and I'm invested.
It's something like hypnosis, I'd say.
In cinemas I almost always spend the first 10 minutes of the film getting annoyed about other people in the audience, or just being conscious of something annoying, or just wanting to do something else... And then, if the film's good, I'll get sucked in and forget about everything else.
And then walk out of the cinema 2 hours later with this pleasing feeling that I'm in a film. Visual receptors juiced up to the max.

The threads here on Luton and Dover are supported by a lot of real life footage (8mm?) slices of British life on BFI. That was part of the reason for starting the thread. Seaside summers etc. Provincial life caught unguarded. Clips with ladies chilling who look like my Nan. Plenty of intriguingly free bits and bobs.
