one of the reasons i respect Westwood is that he never let these people bully him into supporting their terrible scene. he said no the music is terrible and the audience is terrible and i wont have anything to do with it.

The degeneration.
My thesis is generally that rave and the 89-91 shift sucked all the excitement and energy out of UK rap and into itself. I think this is accurate, 'cos the decent UK MC musics emerged out of offshoots of this - 2 step and Jungle MCs etc.

I like a bit of Gunshot from the early era. I hope I still have my copy of Patriot Games.

I've decided to do my PHD thesis on how miserable UK Hip-Hop represents the tragic last dregs of the Romantic movement in Britain.

we haven't exhausted the subject yet by any means. Haven't heard nearly enough from you yet Jack. Share your brilliant thoughts with us.

And then, of course, for whatever reason, all the excitement and energy went out of club/rave music and into rap music.

Unfortunately I've got a boring/stressful job to do that takes up most of my braintime.

One of the many fascinating things is how the mid 90s becomes crystallised. Already independent, undie rap is backwards looking, from the moment of its gestation. There's something about the music of that time. In a sense it is he highest development of rap music. You can't top it all you can do is make pale imitations of it with diminishing returns, or you explode it

In a literary sense, it's the endpoint. As far as sampling goes it's the end point.

Nobody held on to the rap music of the early 90s or the 80s in the same way. It's an interesting phenomenon.

For a lot of people hiphop music IS that mid 90s period and I need Corpsey to elaborate on this with reference to his PhD thesis

No thesis, but one track blazed through that period you allude to like few others. The finest beats imaginable, what a groove
