R&B you should know and love

Can't believe I missed this thread as it happened

The Dream - operatic, over the top, melodramatic (with a deadpan smirk), sheened futurist, lascivious, tongue-in-someones-cheek, R Kelly minus the hideous truth, etc. Etc.

In fact there's a certain irony to the dream (inherited from R Kelly) which somewhat calls into question RnB going for those big authentic emotions... except I don't think that's what's happening on the musical level.
"put it down" e.g. is really a comical song about shagging but musically it registers as an impassioned cry.

Saying that I do think RnB (in the mainstream) lost something when it became vulgar like rap.

if you can't paint in primary colours you're not worthy. you're a minor figure. if you can't make people cry, you\re a minor figure. if you don't want to make people cry youi're not worthy of consideration

Funnily enough I was thinking about this in relation to a film I was rewatching called The farewell which made me want to cry towards the end.

Not every great piece of art has made me want to cry but certainly I reserve a special respect and affection for things that really move me.

Destiny's child in school was a total gender split. I was barely aware they existed and all the girls could recite their songs backwards.

To this day though I don't really like Beyonce either and it's cos of that aggressive virtuosity of hers I think
