love of hazelnut-chocolate is universal

it is not. continental Europe can keep its chocolate spread along with its mayonnaise on french fries.

the problem being not its Europeanness but that no one anywhere needs chocolate spread of any kind

especially America, blessed by the grace of God to be the home of the greatest spread in the history of the world, peanut butter

you're right, of course. although I will say Hershey's, the all-American chocolate, is like earwax compared to good English chocolate.

like thousands of others, my family once took a tour of the Hershey's factory in Hershey, Pennsylvania (where, yes, the street lamps are the shape of Hershey's kisses). enormous open vats -- which to a little kid looked the size of a football field -- of gloopy chocolate being mixed by huge metal bars that went back and forth, the slow-rolling waves of chocolate made me nauseous.

Apparently America has a reputation for appalling chocolate. I remember seeing a thread on the UK Politics subreddit discussing a trade deal and even the people defending chlorinated chicken etc were saying how bad it was.

ok, you don't have to rub it in. I'm sure there's some small-batch artisanal chocolate maker in Brooklyn or Austin or Portland producing quality product, wrapped in 100% recycled paper.

btw, back in America's manufacturing heyday, it was common for factories to be open to free daily guided tours. we once toured a electric power plant and I got a free "Reddy Kilowatt" coloring book at the end.

I went on a school trip to a factory and they had giant bars of the stuff in these big trolleys and we were offered some without any sugar in it which was fucking horrible.

my wife once left an open package of cooking chocolate in the fridge, looked just like a regular chocolate bar. I wasn't paying attention, I broke off a piece and ate it...yeah, unsweetened chocolate is pretty bad.

Other than that, piss-poor. UK up to usual abysmal standard, though wasn't so glaringly obvious this year with the bar set so low.
