Music for Old People

Seeing as, in youth culture terms, all of us are past our prime, could you conceive of a musical movement for us and by us. The old and embittered. Is it possible. Is it desirable. Is it related to mvuents masters study?

Imagine how many old people have been making tunes since their teens but no one ever cared cos they weren't that good, or never had the lucky break, or the confidence to push themselves forward. Is that a compost heap which could produce anything of value?

Could the next big thing be for and by people who are grown ups. We live like children, a lot of us. A lot of middle aged people still in flat shares for instance. Scraping by. Doing loads of drugs. Don't go yuck gross, try and imagine how it might work if it were actually good.

But unless we're all going out and having shared experiences it's just nice things to pass the time, nothing more. Frippery without any weight

I really think that communal experiences that demand a certain commitment are key to this. Going out a lot to the same nights etc. Seeing the same faces over and over again and feeling like it's a movement

There are examples of this with older crowds of course. Love From Outer Space. The whole doom metal / black metal renaissance to a certain extent.

Country music is (in part) a cultural movement of old and embittered people talking about how shit their lives are and wanting to fuck and take drugs

I guess what I'm saying is, it can be done. But it's not necessarily good

Surely we'd all be too tired?

Revive reggae nights are like this. The music is amazing and made for being played at volume but it's for an older crowd.

Also, me, Jon and Paul STN going to Cafe Oto.

Seeing as you mentioned the embittered, `i saw a video last night of Farage singing along to Rule Britainna. The person who tweeted it said "this is obviously a Cunts Anthem"

finally, a thread I can relate to.

have no idea what it would sound like, although it might not be something new and different. probably just an extension (or retread) of the last musical trend you were really into. over here, people like Springsteen keep on keeping' on, with just slight variations from his earlier career, listened to by an audience that prefers the familiar to the innovative.

or maybe we'd be cranky old bastards like Dylan, not giving two shits what anyone thinks and bashing out highly acclaimed albums at age 79.

curiously similar and different perspectives when even the elders among us were a bit younger here:
I went to a Coxsone revival gig in Brixton to see Aba Shanti just before lockdown, it was more like that thread than this one

woops

is not like other people
if you look carefully at the history of white people stopping people from going out dancing as they age you will realise how invidious this position actually is
