As a Californian hippy you certainly should. Seems like a period piece now. Almost impossible to take seriously

Yeah the beats seem daft nowadays.

Even calling them "the beats"...just intrinsically silly

I've never liked Kerouac. Very boring writer.

I want to try The Subterraneans at some point, but On the Road is possibly the worst thing I've ever read.

Not sure I'd call Kerouac flabby... I'm not a fan but I'd use a different epithet

I've only read The Subterraneans, which I think he wrote in some single bender session.

I took a lot away from the concept of spontaneous prose, though. What little I've read about it.

For me flabbiness is endemic to American hippy poetry. It's the essence of it. Loose, careless use of words.
