need a third "both" choice. maybe a slight edge to chunky, but pretty even in my mind.

I recall @padraig (u.s.) expressing his admiration for PB, curious to know his reading on it.

I thought about a 'both' option, but it's more interesting - as interesting as a peanut poll can be... - if you have to choose one or the other.

crunchy all the way

but there's really no right answer, just personal preference - all peanut butter is good so long as it's real peanut butter, i.e. the kind you have to mix

and not some bastardized Jif-style peanut spread full of roasted sugar and hydrogenated oil

Whole Earth. It's got palm oil thiugh which apparently you're not supposed to eat. But on the other hand there's no sugar which is good.

Smooth is for pervert fetishists, I hate to think what it says about their psyches. Something depraved obviously.

There's a brand called meridian with no Palm oil but it's got no salt which is a bit too puritanical for me. We need balance.

the old school health food shops used to have peanut butter machines which made peanut butter for you. Quite exciting. But nowadays it's all aspirational lifestyle health food shops like whole foods

explain this please?
there are two kinds of peanut butter - confusingly named "natural" and "conventional"

natural is just peanuts (and usually salt, tho you can get it without) - as luka said, the oil separates and you have to stir it the first few times you use the jar

conventional - i.e. Jif, Skippy, etc - uses hydrogenated vegetable oil as an emulsifier, and it's also usually full of unneeded sugar

idk the exact history - probably not hard to look up - but presumably "conventional" was developed as a convenience so people didn't have to stir

when I was a kid the Jif style was the default but nowadays you can get real peanut butter at any grocery store here, every big brand does both

natural peanut butter is a million times superior. Jif is like Nescafe compared to real coffee with the added detraction of being unhealthy.

as far as machines to grind your own, it's not just WF, higher-end regular grocery stores sometimes as well, some Costcos I believe

certainly it's true that traditionally it was yr typical small independent health food store

the cycle of peanut butter is basically

it's invented (natural) - someone creates "conventional" - natural becomes a health food thing - health food becomes mainstream

peanut butter is the greatest spread or nut butter in the history of human endeavor and Jif etc is an abomination against it

that's all you really need to know

I like other nut butters sometimes but they're so mega expensive it's only going to be a once a decade thing

Every ten years I might buy a cashew or a hazelnut. It's true peanut just works better though.

in re convenience, I have seen plenty of other crimes against peanut butter

peanut butter - Jif style ofc - and jelly in the same fucking jar

peanut butter and jelly together in slices like American cheese for mfers too lazy to take 30 seconds to to spread them with a knife

You can get peanut butter mixed with Nutella and peanut butter mixed with marmite. Neither of which is bad per se.
