Can you change your mind?

When it comes to politics my mind is very easily changed because it has nothing solid to cling to. I'm totally uninformed about any issue you could think of, and so if somebody tells me it's capitalism's fault, I'll be compelled to believe it, and if somebody tells me it's cultural marxism, ditto.

I'm the perfect clay for extremists to mould into a nazi/commie.

(N.B. This isn't true of course as everybody knows I'm instinctively deeply conservative and am much more likely to become a nazi than communist.)

Myatt is a good example of someone who appears to have changed his mind radically but actually his core values have been a constant.

I hadn't heard of this guy before, but from the description of him here, he reminds me of the white convert in Four Lions. Who is of course the most zealous and radical would-be jihadi in the whole gang, and who starts ranting about "Jewish spark plugs" when his shitty old car won't start.

I think "belief shifting" etc dropped it's currency when people started thinking about nazism again. There was that realisation that not all things are relative.

well it was always the Order of No Members back in the day, but has been cited as a key influence on some of the fresh crop of neo-Nazi lone wolf terrorist stuff.

It all gets murky quite quick because various agencies have a vested interest in talking up the threat though.

Watching this series of Gurdjieff lectures, and they brought up a term he used, perhaps even coined: metanoia.

Merriam-Webster has it as "a transformative change of heart; especially a spiritual conversion"

I would've thought the -noia would refer to gnosis, but etymonline argue nous, which I think makes even more sense:

1768, "penitence, spiritual conversion," from Greek metanoia "afterthought, repentance," from metanoein "to change one's mind or purpose," from meta, here indicating "change" (see meta-) + noein "to have mental perception," from noos "mind, thought," which is of uncertain origin.
