sad though i suppose how we disengage with reality

This may be stating the obvious but: great swathes of reality weren't made for us, but the internet is.

As frustrating and annoying and disturbing and depressing as the internet can be, it seems to me that it's seldom boring.

But by being boring (or should I say uneventful), reality can open up a space for thinking and feeling that the internet completely fills or drowns out.

only because you let it "be true". don't let it.

Again, it's clearly not that simple. You could repeat the same advice to any addict for instance and it would still be true in the same way but hopefully it would be obvious, in that context, how trite and complacent that advice actually is

I quite often find it boring, there's this type of really low level stimulation that you get from scrolling through maybe fb or twitter that is really unsatisfying but kills time,
Kind of connected to the engagement spiral where you get diminishing returns chasing those little red dots (like the ones that annoyingly have shown up on here since we chanegd software)

Yeah I don't mean that it's constantly exciting or brilliant more that you can never stop looking at it. Possibly because of the promise of entertainment always a few clicks away.

Theres also the control element. You feel in charge of your own experience online and its difficult to step away from

But we really aren’t in control are we. I’m not anyway. I can go in with intent but I’m soon lost in the reels. Captured by the nerds. attention stolen away. sense of time and place stolen away, left feeling unfulfilled and inadequate and boring and small and foggy brained

I think it felt less depressing when I participated in social media more, expressing myself and saying stupid thing, engaging with people, but these days im very passive. The only place I think out loud is here (Aren’t you lucky!)

Not watched this and I don't suggest you watch it but YouTube keeps trying to make me watch it and it feels relevant

Me too. I don't even like it that much. Sometimes it hits the spot but it's much deeper than that. It's the most magical brand on earth. It's living in our heads.

I love the internet tbh.

If you had told me when I was 10 years old, in 1998, that twenty years later I would have a little box I would carry everywhere and it could let me watch every show and, more importantly, listen to any music I wanted, at any time and any place in the world, I would have thought I would have to be making Bills Gates money and it would have been the greatest thing ever. We didn't even have five terrestial channels until 1999, I only got to watch TOTP and The Chart Show to find out about music, which is why my taste is historically terrible.

When I realised I was gay and never going to get a shag in my hometown I used the internet to connect with people from nearby towns and cities. Faceparty and early Myspace. I'd probably have never met another gay man until I was 18 at uni and that would have been dismal. Not that it was excellent but at least it opened a door that wasn't open to me then. I think online dating is wonderful because it allows you to self-select and peruse in a way that being set-up or meeting people in a social situation doesn't.

I love Wikipedia wormholes. I love Discogs recommendations. Nature is over-rated.
