i live quite close to the path of the new river, which is a canal that runs from hertfordshire to islington, built in the time of elizabeth (the first) I think. a goldsmith called hugh myddelton gets all the credit, statues of him in islington and holborn viaduct, etc but the original idea was had by a bloke called edmund something or other, edmund is also my first name. the new river fills stoke newington reservoirs and the filtering station is a local landmark.
