Marvin Gaye said:
In 1969 or 1970, I began to re-evaluate my whole concept of what I wanted my music to say ... I was very much affected by letters my brother was sending me from Vietnam, as well as the social situation here at home. I realized that I had to put my own fantasies behind me if I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world.[14]

I got it, aged say, 15. Liked it ok, gradually started to find it repellent.

It started to sound a bit too cocktail umbrella lounge lizard Latin hotel lobby band. I really grew to dislike it. But I was playing it this evening I said to my friend compare and contrast with Curtis mayfield they said "he's not trying to be liked"
I thought that was a good thing to say and made me enjoy the album more

There's certain,y a distance there, a distance afforded by virtuosity, an almost off handed virtuosity no longer thrilled with itself

I really love it. It's a like an extended prayer innit. Hypnotic devotional music that swirls around itself for an hour.

I think it's really sullied by now being the canonical one album made by a black person that racist Beatles dads are allowed to like as much as the beatles

Why did the dads choose this one album though, out of all the albums? I think it's because it's not funky, except inner city blues. Funkiness scares the dads.

In a related sort of way, it's hard to write the world funkiness without checking yourself and ask "do I really want to write the word funkiness here? Do I have to?"

And yet sometimes one does

I bought the CD as a teenager after seeing it in a list like this and didn't really get it. I loved the title track, but felt every other track sounded like a worse version of it. I'll have to give it another listen at some point.

I like that bit where he goes on and on about won't somebody SAVE THE CHILDREN????????

it's so unfiltered and dances right on the edge of being ridiculous while also being totally true. That's just what I like in music
