Aliases

Been listening to a bunch of the Photek stuff under Aquarius, Studio Pressure, The Sentinel etc and it got me wondering who else has aliases worth checking; seems much more common in dance music than anywhere else.

In house music and probably loads more genres you get people remixing themselves under aliases which is fun to spot. Must have been even cooler before the internet when it was all shrouded in mystery. Nothing against the 'scogs or owt, like

Has this thing kind of died out now? I'm sure you don't see it so much now. There's a few people who still do it, like Shed who comes out with a new mysterious alias every few years and everyone works out it's him in a few minutes, but not that many others I'm aware of.

The cynic in me thinks it's because it's much more about the personal brand now. Why compromise your Brand by putting out confusing aliases?

As a rule if thumb, the Photek alias stuff is better than the Photek stuff. What does this say about the aesthetic decisions made when it comes to your signature moniker? (That they are shit?)

Todd Terry was a pioneer of this, mainly as a way of having as many different records out on different labels at the same time as possible, I think, for contractual reasons.

Black Riot, Masters At Work, Royal House, Hardhouse, Orange Lemon, CLS etc etc

There must be a sense of freedom that comes with getting out from under your primary alias. I prefer the Tom & Jerry stuff to 4 Hero and that thing I posted last night from Marc Mac says as much,

"... Myself and Dego produced the Tom and Jerry records as a little fun side project from the usual Reinforced output. We channeled both our Manix and TEK9 monikers into the tracks and 90% of the tunes were made in a few hours, the 1st 12" was made in under an hour (both tracks), we had a production race lol, like I said it was about fun and capturing the moment, the vibe as quick as possible... "

I was thinking about "Dirt McGirt" last night after making the thread. It's difficult for vocalists and rappers unless they wanna perform with their face covered or have no public profile as you just go "It's ODB".

Love that Dirt McGirt tune on the Neptunes comp.
