Yes, sometimes they get put in the bathroom, but the kitchen is primo real estate for dishwashers and ovens, no room for washers and dryers.

You find a corner of the house with tiles—something where if water leaks, you can mop it up no problem—and then you stack em two high, a dryer and a washer. Sometimes a utility closet. Sometimes the bathroom. Sometimes the basement of the building, there'll be a couple units for everyone in the complex.

Ah yeah, years ago I dated a girl who lived in a big 1950s block in Chicago and there was an arrangement like this (except it was on, like, the 20th floor).

Edit: tell a lie, it was from the 60s. Cool place, awesome views across the city.
