Yeah the current wave of metaverse hype is pretty much built around a vision of goofy video games and ersatz virtual assets. The various technologies underpinning these things are only getting better though, which is worth bearing in mind.
To me the actual trend is how we are spending now a third of our lives on screens, dealing less with people and events directly, but more with digital representations of people and events. The term metaverse does semantically apply to this trend, it just happens to be facilely sensationalized to drive investment.
