Subject: 16th annual walser walk {december 25, 2021}
To: Matvei Yankelevich <matvei.yankelevich@gmail.com>

dearest comrades and associates,
esteemed veterans of the annual robert walser walk,
loyal stakeholders in the various robert walser societies,
fortunate initiates of these societies,
and/or
curious acquaintances of any of the above listed persons:

it is both a responsible pleasure and a pleasurable responsibility to inform you of the intentions of the new robert walser society of prospect park — despite the everlasting nature of upheavals and uncertainties we would have wished to be more ephemeral — to host the sixteenth annual walser walk beginning at eleven o'clock on christmas day, december twenty-fifth of this year, two thousand and twenty-one.

it would cause me some quantity of remorse were i not to preface the details of this year's invitation with an elucidation on the lowercase type used in its delivery, especially because some of the newer recipients may be disquieted at the sight of it. not long ago, in past invitations, we apologized for this state of affairs, justifying it as an unfortunate necessity resulting from a diminishment in uppercase holdings at the society compositor's disposal, which then-forward warranted the casting of subsequent missives from the same matrices. by this time, however, it has simply become a time honored tradition to deliver this news to you, and all other communiques of the society, in a tidy and quiet miniscule.

i am likewise compelled by propriety — owing to the respectful nature of the society's attitude toward all recipients of this invitation as well as to its reverent feelings toward its forebears — to clarify that the sixteenth annual walser walk is, for the new walser society of prospect park, in fact only its fifth foray on the sixth anniversary of its charter. as the humble servant of our society, i am yet again honored to announce the corroboration of the annual walser walk's initiating source and inspiration, the robert walser society of western massachusetts, which six years ago had passed the smoldering torch of this timeless folly to our modest institutional body to keep alight, if dimly so in comparison to brighter, more brazen lamps.

having dispensed with these most pleasurable if requisite preambles, i am duty-bound and just as pleased to progress directly to the incidental yet essential brass tacks, nuts, and bolts:
as in previous years, this year's walk will begin at unnameable books on vanderbilt avenue where any ones willing will gather at just before eleven o'clock on the morning of december twenty-fifth to inaugurate the first step of the journey.

the society encourages all who are able to rise at an early hour to join us at this crucial juncture in order to partake fully of the expedition and reap the benefit of trodding the complete course.

however, as always, there are no penalties for joining the group at a later station; indeed, participants are encouraged to coalesce with the group at whatever hour suits their individual needs (for the purpose of which they may consult the schedule posted below) and likewise to feel completely free to dislocate themselves from the gathering at any time and for any reason (whether of whim or obligation) by departing the walk at or between any of the schedule's stations, which are themselves subject to change.

the stations of the walk are as follows:
~ grand army plaza (11:15 pm)
~ prospect park lake, south shore (12:15 pm)
~ the skating rink and its crucial amenities (12:40 pm)
~ the camperdown elm and the boathouse (1:10 pm)
~ the maryland monument (1:30 pm)
~ lookout hill (1:45 pm)
~ concluding steps (2 pm to 2:45 pm): from lookout hill, the walking party will descend to the nethermead, wandering through the ravine, then past the dungan oak monument toward the rose garden and the vale of cashmere, and finally the endale arch, through which those still in attendance will exit the park through the grand army plaza entrance, passing between its eagle-crested columns, in the direction of the public library where the party may disband.

Dr. Albert Fann And The Higher Minds – The Ballad Of Derrick Gordon

I prefer the instrumental b-side, but the a-side apparently is an "inspirational story'

Derrick Gordon, 21, who dreamed of being a professional basketball player only to find a different kind of fame, folded his 6-foot, 5-inch frame down into the sofa of his mother’s Crenshaw-area home and was clearly uncomfortable to be talking yet again about his health.

“I’d rather not,” he said of attracting so much attention since more than 17,000 people donated money toward the $125,000 his family could not afford for the new heart that was planted in his body by Stanford University surgeons in October, 1983.

He did not say a great deal more.

“He was quiet like that even before his illness,” his mother, Annette Gordon, volunteered.

Disease Killed Brother

Derrick, a victim of the same baffling heart disease that took the life of his older brother, Frederick, in 1982 and that has shown evidence of itself in several other members of his family, continues to go to UCLA Medical Center every two weeks for checkups.

edit: "crowd sourcing" 80s style, set to "boogie"

edit: the last few days have taught me to treasure the moments you can share with the ones you love, life is short, don't take your loved ones for granted
