Amazing mix from Spooky on FACT. Good write up as well.

Let’s face it, a lot of DJs are full of shit – particularly when it comes to their work rate.

So next time you see a DJ on your Twitter feed giving it the early bird act because they woke up before 9am, claiming they’re some sort of marathon man for playing an hour and a half set, or acting like two international bookings in a weekend is a slog rather than a privilege, remind them about Spooky.

With more and more acts getting a year’s worth of bookings on the strength of one single, Spooky increasingly feels like a throwback for several reasons. A resident on long-running London radio station Deja Vu, it’s not uncommon for Spooky to hit radio four times a week, or even twice a night, doing his usual Grimy Mondays slot and then sticking around to cover a later show. He’s metronome-tight, and he’ll show up your favourite DJ on CDs or vinyl. And perhaps most importantly, he’s put in a shitload of work, DJing regularly for Slew Dem crew at the height of grime pirate radio, and providing instrumental grime and garage masterclasses on various London radio stations over the years. Spooky’s also no slouch as a producer: 2010′s ‘Spartan’ was that year’s biggest grime instrumental, the older ‘Joyride’ is a classic to those who know, and the last two years have seen him release scorching singles through Oil Gang (most recently this year’s ‘Coolie Joyride’) and his own Ghost House label.

As for Spooky’s rapid-fire FACT mix, packed with exclusives and bootlegs… Call it a tour de force, call it what you want – those familiar with Spooky won’t be surprised in the slightest. FACT mix 377 is, quite simply, someone who’s earned his spot as one of the best around in full control.
Pretty sure these guys are associated with Novelist, it's a good freestyle. Now if they could all just pile on a radio show!
There's a grime guy called novelist?

You know that grime has a future, where instead of looking like every other guy on the street, you have grime MCs who look like they stumbled into the video shoot and was just like: "... What's good, you talk to so-and-so...? OH SHIT, CAMERAS!?!? AY, LOOOK...."

yeah. so why has it taken them this long to get a mix off him? typical bullshit. they don't care until grime's got some social cachet again.

novelist is shit.

FACT always have stuff about Grime on their site and as far as I know they've wanted a mix from Spooky for quite a while. Its good timing for Spooky that he's doing one now anyway as he's just got a booking agent and it can't hurt that in coincides with Grime getting more popular. It's a great mix anyway.

ELFKID, not a very "grime" name. Sick though.

it's a good freestyle but seriously though, when has a new london crew done anything like this on radio:

linking to the specific minute doesnt seem to when embedding but from about 14:30

what is the obsession with youtube freestyles right now? Thats why I dont know any young mc's bar novelist. Because they just do youtube and expect people to notice. I don't know how difficult it is to actually reach radio right now though, surely spooky's monday night show is pretty easy to show up on? Always filled with MC's

I think its probably to do with how successful sbtv is and how many guys are try to copy it. lots of kids hoping they'll go viral or something freestyling and lots of other budding youtube entrepreneurs willing to film them. I've been following novelist and every freestyle he does is on some different random dudes youtube freestyle channel.

I think novelist went on radio the other day though, like flex fm.

EDIT: yeah here it is. novelist and kwam http://www.mediafire.com/?b9btp42g9toz634

Youtube is how these people get exposure not radio anymore. Things have moved on, thats why new Grime DJs will struggle to come through without production.

i've worked there since 2008, and you're talking absolute fucking bollocks.

the second ever fact mix was by dj magic, and spooky's been covered in there for years - as has grime in general. so many past features on it, way more than you'd ever get from ra or xlr8r or fader or whatever.

Because Fact have covered it its actually opened the doors in terms of it getting covered on RA and XLR8R or wherever else.

Someone asked me last week why I aint done a Fact Mix but I did one in 2010. Time flies

okok I already said I overreacted. but since you decided to jump in with this aggressive tone anyway... fuck it.

the description implicitly - actually basically explicitly - attacks the work rate of people in the grime scene (like it isn't a scene beset by numerous social, legal, financial difficulties) before introducing a DJ it touts as the one of (if not the) hardest working, best etc w/e as mix no. 377

tbh I thought that was unnecessary. It could have just focussed on Spooky's achievements without needing to use it as a way to criticise others or pretend he's one of a kind. or even just mentioned Score5. To not bother is lazy.

I'm sure Spooky loves you guys and wouldn't recognise any of my criticisms, I'm sure it's a getalong gang, that's fine they're my opinions and I'm entitled to them.

There's a small circle in grime - spooky, hardware, butterz, darq e and oil gang - who seem to get all the coverage. Slew Dem have muscled their way back in.

but who was pushing Cold Blooded in 2009 when they tried to make a little comeback - Logan, Tim&Barry TV and that's it.

who cared about Rage's consistent output before Chronik got back out and forced people to take note of Slew Dem - basically no one, again Logan and Tim&Barry TV was the only one.

if I'm wrong - show me the FACT articles from your first few years there about Slew Dem/Spooky, about trim's first 3 mixtapes etc.
