do people really like shutdown that much? (amazed to see if at no 1 in the guardians best songs of 2015 list). i think its *alright* in a generic, could have been out in 2006 sort of way, but thats not me is a 100 times better. i think most people just didnt know about TNM until it was too late (or until they had been told to like it by drake) so ended up rooting for shutdown instead.

That's Not Me sounds more like 2006, that was the whole point of the track/video surely. It's a better tune.

AJ Tracey
‘Naila’
(Self-released)
AJ Tracey burst onto the grime scene like a fully-formed behemoth this year, blessed with that Kano knack of seeming like he could either beat you up ('Trapsuit') or steal your girl ('Wifey') depending on what mood he's in (ironically, Kano used this same beat on 'Garage Skank', but it's nowhere near as good.) 'Naila' is the crowning moment in a series of great songs released by AJ this year, and it's him in a nutshell: ominous, catchy, full of class one-liners ("Jump straight over connects like Frogger") and ultimately, all about the positivity: who else from West London would extend an arm to South with a Morley's shout-out?

fact agrees with me at least, garage skank is poop.

Pearsall

Prodigal Son
I was going through some old dvd-r's and I found a disc of grime radio rips, all from 2003 to 2005 or so.

I thought what the fuck, might as well put them online, so here they are for anyone who wants to dig in:

Predictably plenty of Roll Deep but also stuff from Ruff Sqwad, Logan Sama, Mac 10, Nasty Crew, Dynasty, Boyz In The Hood, Target, Lioness, DJ Garna, Virus Syndicate, etc

beat is ridiculous (reminds me of old footsie or dizzee) but i find it hard to really buy into novelist.

sounds like he wrote this after watching straight outta compton.

or maybe im getting too old and conservative (small c) to care about a fuck the police song written by a teenager (or someone who wants to sound like one).

heavy heavy monster sound
Reactionary old codgers in "they deserve to be shot because they talk about guns" and "maybe the police are OK, they're just doing their job" shock

id be more wary of ageing men trying to stay on trend with a suspiciously high/borderline creepy level of enjoyment regarding young black men rapping about shooting each other. (eg - I love that Chief Keef lyric where he goes "Shoot you in your nose....or your mouth. Cos you wasn't talking right". There seems to be a lot of people confusing parts of the body around.)

however.

that Novelist tune is pretty good but he's making the grime version of clickbait for FACT-reading types at this point

c'mon son

Lol I don't care about trends, I've just always found ultraviolence hilarious.

kano could learn a thing or two from ghetts about how to write songs/maintain a career. interesting to see all the dancing in that video. cant think of many grime videos like that.

period blood song is brilliant.
