and that girl [Dani Siciliano]'s solo is worthless in my estimation.

Her cover of Come As You Are, Walk The Line, Be My Producer, Why Can't I Make You High... these are all great, great tunes. And Same is one of the best representations of the creeping awareness of another's infidelity I've ever come across, regardless of genre or medium.

All the sadder for the fact that they're no longer an item (I gather).

Live, I didn't having think a chef on stage with Plat du Jour was any good at all, it was silly. I was too far from the stage to feel any heat but I did smell some garlic. I thought the sampling of bell-type noises from the kitchen got a bit same-y... maybe I was expecting more percussion from the utensils, not melody. But I liked them trying it out. I hadn't seen a EWI for years, let alone two at the same time!
i saw him DJ at The End a few years ago and he was house proper rather than glitchy, which I really enjoyed. Oh yeah.. he came on after So Solid at SONAR when I went.. seamless..

Yup yup, that was an amazing set, wasn't it? The Audience > Clouds Across The Moon > I Can't Go For That > The Joker - that bit in particular is one of my all-time-favourite mix sequences. In fact, I shamelessly nicked it for my wedding day set

Whether he's playing live or 'just' DJing, I think he has to be one of the most engaging performers out there. Whenever people play the electronic-music-is-rubbish-live-cos-it's-just-guys-twiddling-knobs-behind-a-mixing-desk card, I point them to Herbert (and Jamie Lidell). Just breathtaking.

Herbert is one of dance music’s—nah, scrap that—music’s giants. I’m sure his stature will nothing but grow for the rest of his, hopefully long, career. If I sound like a zealot, it’s because I am one.

OK... over the weekend i heard some of Herbsters' music again and it does still sound really good -- I must take back some of the things i said . still not really feeling the new album but i must be fair and give the man the credit he deserves... cheers

Anyone else like his production job from 2005, 'Ruby Blue'? It's a pretty solid album IMO.

Ah, right. You had me excited there for a minute. Yeah, Scale seemed like a step back from Bodily Functions and after 2 Dani Siciliano albums in a short time didn't really offer anything extra.

Anyone else like his production job from 2005, 'Ruby Blue'? It's a pretty solid album IMO.

Saw The Matthew Herbert Big Band night before last, it was spectacular. Great compositions, incredible musicians (especially the vocalist,), and Herbert is easily the most animated and endearing "look at me play with a mixing desk and some kaos pads"-style performer I've seen.

Some of his stuff wears a little thin on me, but admittedly it's the stuff I haven't given much of a chance to. I love Bodily Functions, very "musical" microhouse. I like the second Big Band album more than the first, but they're both very well executed and well worth listening to for the half dozen or so truly great cuts on them.

thanks to the pepe braddock thread, i've just started thinking about herbert. i absolutely adore around the house and bodily functions (the latter being one of my favourite albums of all time, right up there in the top 10)

i think this might be where our tastes diverge violently because i have those two albums and couldn't feel differently about them if i tried. to me, his work is simultaneously synthetic and cloyingly faux-emotional. he has taken one of the warmest most sentimental of genres (as in house music) and somehow made it sound lumpen, fiddly and empty. mind you, my ex wife used to love it and i wonder whether this has tainted my enjoyment.

i once saw him play at fabric wearing an electronic drumkit which he proceeded to beat in a rhythmic fashion until this tribal rhythm boomed out of the PA which was incredible to witness. i've also seen his big band thing live (can't remember where, must have been pretty mashed i guess) which was underwhelming.
