The Dissensus Girls Aloud Thread

You're talking about two completely different things tho- one is white production pop... the other is pop R'n'B.

I know what you mean...but even British pop RnB like Jamelia doesn't sound quite up to the US standard. (Maybe "Superstar" came close) Half the time GA sound like a pissed hen party singing on the night bus home, Bananarama style, y'know...to make them more "human". It's the British wariness towards anyone actually being good at something.

I'm far from an expert in such matters, but with Brit pop-R'n'B the productions always tend towards the overtly retro... outside of the grime influenced stuff (R'n'G) obviously... too many real bands, rather than cutting edge production, but then again the way the pop urban market for homegrown acts works in the UK is totally different to the US, its driven by essentially cranking out something very safe and Jools Holland ready, slap it on Radio 1 AND Radio 2, coin the money in... then the act goes away for three years and never has a hit record again...

The best of the GA singles are nothing like that, come on... the whole using rock texture with Dance structures, the amusing playful put down lyrics (which raise a smile rather than inspire hatred unlike, say, Lilly Allen...) the sense of artifice to the whole thing... even the cheapness of the girls' outfits is great, in its own way. Their ballads are rotten tho...

does cry me a river count as a ballad cos as far as i can tell all ballads are rotten (cmar isnt tho). girls aloud rule, and not because they look pretty or sing well.

and as forr that wtw thing, well, all girls aloud covers are shit (apart from girls on film obv.), so what? i skip the covers on wwtns? and its fucking awesome.

But with tracks like "Cry me a River" and "My Love" Timbaland takes the tempo and chordal aspects of a ballad (both songs mid tempo to slow, riding on clear chord progressions as the dominant musical attribute) with many aspects of the club banger (the textured and detailed beats, synthetic and highly original arrangements etc)... the reason why most pop ballads are rubbish is cos they chuck out all the attributes which made the poppier, uptempo stuff good... an error which Timba with these sort of tracks avoids...

This is so true.

I remember seeing them on TOTP last year or maybe the year before - relatively recently anyway. Destiny's Child had come on and performed this amazing live routine on a catwalk, and they fucking owned it. Me, my mate and the wife were just sat there awestruck at their professionalism. (Admittedly, we'd just had a smoke, but still).

Next thing we know, GA come on to perform their single, which was at no. 1, and were just awful. One of them started waving her hands in the air like she was doing karaoke down the fucking pub. I'd love to have been backstage to see Destiny's Child's reaction.

That's assuming they could have cared less ;)

have you never sat through a full DC or beyonce or aaliyah or ANY R&B album and the ballads they all have on there?! or listened to the slow jam shows on choice fm or something like that? lol

ah, the grass is always greener, isn't it/innit...I could be wrong, but I'll bet most Yanks would side with Girls Aloud (leastways the ones who even know of them), while most Brits would take Destiny's Child, et al...just a hunch, see...

Destiny's Child had one great album nearly a decade old which they've been living off ever since.

Cheryl Cole once publicly called me "fookin' mental."

I know whose side I'm on.

I agree with Henry S, and I also agree with Gumdrops about ‘Love Machine’’s being far better than B****cé’s ‘Crazy in Love’. I think you Brits undervalue your home-grown artists; I have noticed this tendency in other threads as well. Oddly, Girls Aloud are almost completely unknown here while Sugababes are quite well-known. The ‘Walk This Way’ cover is horrible, but I dislike the original so I don’t feel particularly offended.

Err yes. I can't hack a lot of that sound, I have to say, given that it jettisons everything I like in favour of dubious sonic "authenticity", lyrical schmaltz, and sub-par attempts at gospel. It lacks anything I can hang my listening on. Some slow jams can be OK if they keep the subject matter dirty, I guess...

Like their cheaper than cheap outfits, this is an element of their charm, I think. The absence of a total rictus grin professionalism.

i'm a late convert to GA and i'm kind of convinced that Biology might be the greatest song in the world. That hyperblues riff- utterly artificial- pure genius. Its mainlining E. Its the artifice i love in fact- put them next to a heater and they'd melt in a minute.

The lyrics to the new single are possibly the most absurd i've ever heard though.

The new Shcakleton 12 is the shit too.

happy week for me then YAY!!!!!

My boyfriend at the time took me to see Girls Aloud perform live at the Astoria. I didn't really have an opinion of them but I thought they did a decent live show. And the crowd was pretty crazy too. The sound of a couple thousand screaming lesbians really added to the atmosphere (for once they outnumbered the guys).

Funnily enough I can't recall any of their songs except their cover of Jump (for my love) or whatever it's called
