New Beat

Ok, so there is some sort of revival going on. See Gutterbreakz if you've missed it. The question is: what is the essential stuff to pick up? I don't think I am being out of line when I say that a lot of this music is crap, more so than average. But there must be some good bits that stood the test of time.

So, I would say 101 - Rock to the Beat (better than the original), Miss Nicky Trax - Acid In The House, Lords of Acid - I Sit on Acid are good (funny how they are all made by the same people). Anything else?

There are like 3 Erotic Dissidents records in my local record shop, including the Naked Angels LP. Any good? Does anyone want it because if I don't like it I can send it your way.

some personal favourites are:

The Maxx - Cocaine (BCM)

HNO3 - Doughnut Dollies (amazingly atmospheric and gothick dirge-tech - i just rediscovered this yesterday on the jive records new beat compilation (which is an excellent starter) having not heard it for about 15 years (!!) prompted by nick's timely post and also the v/vm new beat micro-site)

Snowy Red - Euroshima/Wardance (Antler-Subway)

Boytronic - Bryllyant (331/3 + 8 remix) (BCM) - has an great sproingy italo / hi-nrg bassline, but pitched down into this hallucinogenic euro-dance blur.

Tragic Error - Tanzen (Antler-Subway)

Edwards and Armani - Acid Drill (Dance Opera) -- maybe more hardbeat than strictly newbeat

Ghentlon - Cheebala (R&S)

D-Bop - Virgins In-D Sky

the other productions which came slightly later (from Jade 4U, Khan, Lierop -- the Lords of Acid folks) are some of my favourite techno tracks ever: Phantasia 'Inner Light', Science Lab 'Flesh + Blood', etc...

thanks nick for an excellent post!!

Cool! Glad to see the virus is spreading! I'm holding back for now though...further posts with some MP3s in the new year....

Fair enough, but is the Erotic Dissidents LP worth getting?

What you mean 'Naked Angel'? Depends how much it's selling for these days. I don't actually have a vinyl copy myself, so if you hate it, I'll happily take it off your hands, assuming it's not silly money.

Have they got the 'Move Your Ass' 12"? Def pick up that one, mate...

also, for a new beat/hip house hybrid = grey house's "new beats the house" -- on r & s -- 1989

and for a very early heavy techno sound -- which genre i don't go in for -- but here's an exception, played pitched down to -8, the instrumental version = the concrete beat "it's not the way do it" -- on target records -- 1989

also -- and i'm not sure if gutterbreakz mentioned this compilation on his blog -- but one of the very first dance music releases that i purchased, on cassette nonetheless, was this compilation = this is the new beat -- i'd imagine all the stuff on this compilation holds up well -- will have to look for it myself!!!

Yeah, I have that on vinyl. I am a little pissed that the version of "Rock to the Beat" has that stupid rapping because without it it would be the best version of all.

I got Digital Vamp as well but I thought of it as more of a house track. It's very good. I'll check out the others.

That Snowy Red track is from 1982 according to Discogs! I love it too especially that "dance forever and ever" bit, it's so grim, like zombies. Heard it on Serie Noire compilation.

What is hardbeat?

I got this (http://www.discogs.com/release/155719) compilation which is mostly Khan/Lierop productions from the rave era.

That's the annoying thing for me...I don't seem to have some of the New Beat releases I bought at the time. I guess they got sold off for pennies years ago. It's very frustrating. One must always hoard everything on the off-chance you might like it again one day!

Good question. I can hardly remeber myself what the distinction was, but it was an offshoot of New Beat that had a buzz for a while. I had some Liasons D. records which were like classic Hard beat and there were a couple of compilations too. On my list of things to re-discover...

yeah, well it's kinda hard to draw lines!!! -- i suppose my thinking is that if it's from belgium and on subway/target/r&s and b/w 87 and 89, then it's new beat -- regardless of sound

but i suppose for the core new beat sound, then it's erotic dissidents and early lords of acid and anything that sounds like them

greyhouse is a classic -- you'll know it when you hear it -- though you might say it's not new beat, but house???

as for the concrete beat record, i'm not sure if i want to stand behind the recommendation -- played it last night after mentioning it here, and it seemed pretty boring -- too hetero male techno

really, what makes new beat interesting, at least for me, are the over-the-top sex-and-drugs lyrics, the spirit of kinky play and perversion

by the way, some of my all-time favorite records are just outside the bounds of new beat

d-shake's "yaaaah" -- 1990 -- way too fast to count as new beat, but the bad motherfucker bassline and the "yaaaah" conveys the will-to-perversion of new beat taken to the max

gto's "why do men have nipples" -- 1989 -- last track on the g-force album -- which samples a dating show on anchorage, alaska television -- wicked and hilarious and psychedelic -- more subversive of the straight hetero win-the-hand-of-a-woman-with-money-and-material-things-and-boring-things worldview than any new beat record that i know of

Yeah I was thinking about D-Shake "yaaah" the other day. Is it just me or is it almost exactly like Space Opera - 3001 (which D-Shake was involved in as well)? That Space Opera...it's like a who is who of early R&S. Yeah, there is no line you can really draw between New Beat and later house/rave/techno. One smoothly blends into another. For me the appeal isn't in all the sex samples, it's in the slow dirge-like quality. Those blunt synths. It's so stiff, cold and plastic. It's that EBM quality of it.
