Saw something pointing out that people promoting antivax and 5g conspiracy theories are the answer to the schoolchild question "Why are they making me study all this science stuff, I'm never gonna use it?"

I don't think so. Vaccination will always tap into some pretty primal, deeply rooted fears. Even if you are aware of the science (which is not hugely complicated after all) the thought of it and the way it could be used is still inherently paranoia inducing.

Well... education and so on are one of the only ways to overcome ignorance and superstition. Of course it doesn't always work but it's the only tool really. The more people understand it the more they are likely to have that paranoia induced, or if they do, to fall under its sway. I don't think it's that controversial to suggest that antivaxxers tend towards the less educated (I've never seen the stats though, I guess it's conceivable I'm wrong).

I don't know about other countries, but in the USA, rates of anti-vaxx belief correlate positively with education level: https://abcnews.go.com/Health/paren...d-affluent-educated-experts/story?id=60674519

So ignorance, by itself, doesn't explain it.

Personally I'm all for lengthy prison sentences for spreading misinformation that could endanger lives. Andrew Wakefield, at the very least, would be spending the rest of his life in a particularly small and uncomfortable cell if there was any justice in the world.

Stuff like Flat Earth is fairly harmless and gives us all a good laugh now and then, and while 9/11 Trutherism can lead people into some very dark ideological places, it rarely directly leads people to risk their own or others' lives. But anything connected to human health should be dealt with pretty ruthlessly, I think.

Bit of a tangent, but you've just made me remember something... The grapejuice blog I read last night had a thing about 9/11, how not enough prominent people on the left (he gives the example of Chomsky) came out and said 'what we are being told about this isn't right' and this (if I'm right interpreting what he is saying) allowed the space for the alt right to develop.

Something along those lines yeah. I can't remember which essay it was. The pizza one?

I mean I think that part of things, he might be right actually. The rest of what he's saying I'm not so sure. But I get what he means about how this space got opened up somehow, cos the left were too busy pissing about or fighting with one another

I think he's right, yes. The distrust of official narratives seeded by 9/11'is incalculable. So in that sense the effects are still very much reverberating today
