Thomas Mapfumo refused entry to UK

The reasons given for this are that he entered the US on a 'P visa' granted to musicians but then changed this by applying for political asylum.

Why would he make the change in application?

there is no 'refugee visa', so UK will refuse visitors visas to anyone they suspect wishes to claim asylum

i don't know what's the relationship between Mapfumo & Mugabe? anyone?

didn't he annoy him by singing in tribal/native language, and release a directly critical album? or something. think he was arrested on some trumped up charges at some point, too...

so is iraq, apparently. wonder what the FO travel advice is? :(

Bored at work, so thought I'd investigate:

FCO says:

We strongly advise against all travel to Baghdad and the surrounding area, the provinces of Basra Maysan, Al Anbar, Salah Ad Din, Diyala, Wasit, Babil and Ninawa. We advise against all but essential travel to the rest of Iraq.

If you consider your presence in Iraq is essential you should have adequate and continuous professional close security arrangements and ensure they are regularly reviewed.

There is a high threat of kidnapping across Iraq. Including in the cities of Baghdad, Basra, Fallujah, Al Ramadi, the towns of Najaf and Kufa and on the Baghdad-Amman highway. Individuals have been kidnapped at their residence, work and in transit. Kidnappers do not discriminate between nationalities or religions. Since April 2006, over 100 people have been kidnapped. Those kidnapped include individuals who had security arrangements in place and some of those kidnapped have been killed. .... You should only consider visiting other areas of Iraq if you have strong commercial or professional reasons to do so.

The 'commercial reasons' bit almost sounds like a tacit endorsement of war profiteering

invited to play in UK again, opening of a new night in Feb., and again won't be able to come:

temporary work visa application fee: 95 euros. the club is not paying me very much more than that.

guess UK government simply doesn't want small time artists to visit.

maybe in a few months i can line up a few gigs together and make it worthwhile...

sign and forward online petition to change UK Visa procedures for visiting artists!

remembering last May, it was not fun, spending 10 hours waiting in a room without book or ipod, and then driven to the detainment center, where i got into bed in a room with other detainees at 2AM, only to be woken at 5AM again to be driven back to airport to be sent back to Berlin... only 1 phone call so the other promoter was left with an empty dj booth in the club. treated like a criminal, just because i wanted to bring some grooves.

heavy heavy monster sound
Ah hope it works out Zhao, at least it sounds like they're gonna let you back in if you can pay though, I know people who have had to go through hell to be able to get back in after they got kicked out so that's good news anyway!

yeah they told me at the time that it would not influence my next visit,
provided i get a visa.
i decided to not go this time, but hopefully later in the summer...
and i also hope it really is 95 euros,
as on this page the cheapest option of all, Tier 5 Temporary Work, is £190!!
