where is this junior boys gig tomorrow?

Darned cockwombles.
I booked in advance for this (foolish, foolish me), but failed to take into account the massive hangover that has plagued me all day, coupled with the fact that it will take me about 3 hours on the tube to get there and back.

If I could give the ticket to someone else on here, I would gladly do so (been trying to explain the concept of the Junior Boys all week to my friends, only to be met by vaguely disapproving stares), but I guess you have to present the original credit card at the door to pick it up.

Damn these anti-fraud systems.

Was I the only one to be a little disappointed by this gig?

Ok, time to fess up that I am generally underwhelmed by gigs (Stooges apart), but it was kinda tame, and the 2-step/Timbaland influences were underplayed, I thought. Plus, a few too many Nathans in the crowd...

On the plus side, heard some classic Dissensian conversations in the crowd.

they got caught out by luminaries disease, chatting, the gig was too quiet, the sound isn't quite right.
i was trying not to talk but i did sometimes.
i thought they were great, i forget how strange they are, the older songs came off better, i like the fact that they always sing about people being too young, too loud etc, they don't rock at all, exploring loss, i'm not sure if i like the new album as much, it's very polished, i think i prefer the 2 step adaption, the lead singer comes over as a rum fellow.

did anyone watch metronomy ?
i like that lot too.

you had to be pretty close to the front to hear it properly, up there the sound was pretty crisp and all the intricacies came through pretty well.
they were plagued by sound problems and equipment gaffes, but overall i thought they came through well and the encore was great.
the crowd were a fucking disgrace and reminded me well why i don't go to things like this very often.
had to tell the guy behind me yammering on about his coke dealer very loudly right the way through the first song to shut the fuck up or leave the room, then when i went to the bar you could hardly hear the jbeez for all the self-important waffle going on.

A rum fellow - lol. Agree completely about the older songs - 'Birthday' was pretty fantastic, and the one with the buzzsaw/rave bass noises was great too. Yeah, some of the new stuff was dull/too polished though.

Glad I went though.

Yeah, I got there late and couldn't be bothered fighting through to the front cos I was feeling fragile...

Glad you agree about the crowd - there were some serious c*nts in that room. Really like the sign they have behind the bar to the effect of 'shut the fuck up'.

Oh, just remembered that bit where the lead singer went "My guitar's just broken. Hey, no worries - guitars are shit anyway." Luvvit.

Yeah, enjoyed the gig, but did leave kinda underwhelmed. The engineering problems broke things up a bit, and made the whole thing a bit on edge, like they couldn't really commit to their performance because a) they couldn't hear anything other than the bass and b) they were living in fear of something blowing up.

Did enjoy it though, was interesting to hear these songs re-imagined in a live context - particularly with live drums. It was weird because the JB's songs typically get propelled along by quite subtle shifts in rhythm and atmospheric synths, esp on the new record, which didn't really come through too much in a live context, . This is probably why the older stuff came across better - the rhythms are simpler, more consistent, and there's more of a krautrocking groove to it. Overall, prefer the new stuff on record, the old stuff live. Under the sun was awesome, found myself grinning at the amusingly spacerock guitars.

And, yes, the crowd were fucking irritating. Despite the sign behind the bar.

What's most disappointing about these kinds of gigs, is the lack of dancing. It's so frustrating.

God, this is the first thread in ages where I'm in agreement with everyone else! Lack of dancing - EXACTLY. AND - those who did start to dance were doing so in such a hipster, annoying look-at-me way. Such a contrast to the night before, when I danced ridiculously to 'Holiday' in a club with about four people there.... :)

I may be intolerant, but I can't fucking BEAR people who pay lots of money at a gig with rhythm and funk, and just stand there. I did last night (extreme tiredness, and felt a bit let down by the sound), but usually never do that. When I went to the Lemonheads recently, there were 75 people going mental (me included), and the other people were just standing there like lemons. Same even with Fatboy fucking Slim.

well, i was on the guest list and i think a significant proportion of the crowd were listed too - it looked massive when i had to find my name on it, anyway. i think this was why the crowd were so irritating: because they didn't pay and saw it was a chance to schmooze and a gig to be at, rather than because they really wanted to see the junior boys and listen to them properly.
the especially gobby dude behind me was certainly not a paying punter and it really pissed me off that plenty of people who paid to be there for all the right reasons would barely have been able to hear.
i always try put myself in the shoes of a fan who wants to see the band when i'm reviewing a gig or lucky enough to get free squeezes.
i'd have been damned annoyed with a lot of the people there if i'd lashed out a tenner to hear a band and then couldn't (i mean, i was pretty bloody annoyed when i hadn't paid).
when i got in (just as metronomy were finishing - they looked quite silly and fun from the last two songs, fwiw) a few people were outside angling for tickets. it's a shame that people who were willing to pay and are into the junior boys couldn't get in the venue when it seemed half the people there couldn't have given a toss who was on stage.

That explains a lot of things - I hadn't quite twigged why I was the only one within earshot who seemed to know ANY of the words to 'Birthday'.

it's often the case that journalists are the ones chatting thru gigs unfortunatley i think.
it did seem like no one really paid to go to that gig too, i guess it's exposure isn't it, isn't jeremy afraid of flying too so it's a bit of a rarity to see them.
it's would have been quite hard to dance it was rather packed in.

I'm quite pissed off now... I know of at least 5 people who failed to get tickets to this. Bastards.

Metronomy were quite fun, yeah. Caught about half of their set, and whilst it was quite er... silly, it was silly in a good way. I liked their half arsed attempts at stage performance, all the silly gestures that they never really committed to enough to make them convincing.

And yeah, it was too cramed to dance really. Which meant i had to do that annoying headbobbing/tapping-one-foot-dance that never really satisfies, and ALWAYS leaves me with a back ache from having at least one foot squarely rooted to the ground at all times.
