the current malaise in music is tied to a wider malase in culture and politics in general. Everything seems to have slipped down to a lower level. And music is the perfect example of how defeated western youth are, there's not going to be another punk or acid house, just more of this crap.
I have a general question about this 'malaise' notion, which I've read repeatedly on dissensus of late. My question is this: could someone please specify a time when there was *not* a general sense of mainstream cultural malaise in their lifetimes, either in the UK or the US or wherever you are located? What exactly does a moment of non-malaise look like? Late 80s/early 90s acid house and rave culture in the UK, I am guessing someone will answer? But others? I mean, what exactly do you have in mind, swears (or anyone else)?

I remember 98-01 being pretty good, UKG, 2step, innovations in R'n'B production and vocal arrangements, lots of good house stuff, first stirrings of grime, IDM hadn't dissapeared up it's own arse yet, rock was on the wane, interesting things happening in electro, it was more a sense that you were going to have even more interesting decade for music ahead, than an actual golden age. Not that things were great, but maybe they would start to be. There's a lot of say, dubstep that I like now, but does it really compare to the embarrasement of riches that came out of house and jungle?
