Yeah, and having said all that I spent approx 4 hours in M&S Marble Arch on wednesday trying to find a suit I liked. And I still don't have a shirt that really works with it.

It is stush as though.

And yeah, the idea of saccing it off and going record shopping occurred more than once, but you can't go to a job interview wearing a bunch of vinyl. At least (before Tea says it) not the sort of job that I'm looking for.

upper management material right there.

Being dragged around topshop by my girlfriend is perhaps the least pleasurable thing that happens to me on a semi-regular basis, aside from the frequent snotty outbreaks of my hellish dust allergy. The lighting, the music, the crowds, the clothes... all headache inducing. but yeah, good for cheap and decent suits. also good for smart clothes is my older sister's rich boyfriend, who has cast down a number of swanky shirts to me over the years.

Topman's range of "skinny" suit jackets are ace.

And they all come in a 34 chest, which is quite rare on the high street. Anything bigger makes me look like David Byrne in Stop Making Sense.

haha ill fitting jackets are awesome in movies and in life. just not on me.

i kinda wish my winter wool coat was a teensy bit smaller. i might try putting it in the dryer for 30 seconds and see what happens.

Some tidbits from Tom Ford’s SS/09 collection:

Thoughts?

I like the colourfulness the most. I also like how the wide lapels make an interesting contrast to the slim fit. Actually, it works surprisingly well! (Swears’ Topman jacket above is a good example of a less daring, more typically 2008 approach.) The socklessness looks ok, but adding a pair of matching socks looks and feels better, so why bother?

Only letdown, in my opinion, is the continuation of that awful Thom Browne, exposed-ankles gimmick. Enough already!

I was thinking he looked pretty sharp until you mentioned the ankles, then I saw those and thought "Oh dear".

yes the old school lapel is interesting... i had a great jacket like that... but lost along with everything else in storage. (oh bloody well)

colors are great. and makes me rethink the possibility of wide ties...

no feeling the ankles either

The cream jacket/light purple shirt combo on the bottom one looks sweet (not sure about the trousers though). Very sharp indeed if you can pull that kind of thing off, but personally i would look an utter dick dressed like that. I am very much a casual dresser.

There's bound to be a backlash against skinny ties sooner or later. Hopefully sooner.

It’s already here! It started at least a year ago.

H&M’s s/s collection – that is, what has leaked from it – looks pretty colourful too. I kind of like the pink pants, and the jacket at the bottom could prove a winner.

Looks like budget Helmut Lang.

H&M had a good budget Stella McCartney-designed line a while ago.

Although H&M clothes fall apart in days and aren't cut as well as Forever 21 clothes are.

I'm on a patent leather kick lately. Which should I get?

I'm leaning towards the first ones since I already have a pair of "gladiator" pumps similar to the second and third ones. The third also come in black suede. (They're all Guess so they're inexpensive and they all cost about the same...)

Yeah, I agree. Plus, the third ones are trendy to the point where they will not be even remotely cool by next season. Also I suspect they look better in theory than in practice.

It's all about navy duffle coats, wellington boots and cashmere scarves this season. (It's fucking cold and wet here, but we compromise with elegance.)

They look kinda great which is why I'd be wary, exactly. If in doubt go for plain or ragga, no in betweens.

I had to jack in my tasteful wool and sailor thing ( last year's schott charity shop jacket! ) cos a shop opened up in trendtown selling everything I'd been wearing ( no joke! ) so I'm rocking early 90s hiphop now. So I vote for anything that looks Versayce. Never goes out of fashion, never comes into fashion.

Except yer Italian, innit? It might mean something different.

you and my GF have about the same taste when it comes to footwear. but she hates anything open toe for some reason (only thing i can think of is when you need to kick someone? -- not me because i'm the Perfect BF™). doesn't bother you?

i would definitely do 1. thin straps are always better than thick. if you had more options i would say less bulky, lighter, thinner.

Haha, exactly, I love Versace.

If I could I would mostly buy Chanel (I like Chanel shoes for the last couple of seasons) but since that's tough to fake on a limited budget I like to let the trashy Italianess come through.

Although I have a pair of Chanel sunglasses that were worth every penny.
