can we have a discussion how about how the average black teenager has not dressed this "white" since the early 70's?

thigh length coats w/ epalettes, thin cardigans, straight leg jeans, arab terrorist neck scarfs...

I was on a night out in Liverpool and my mate saw a black guy with the nerd specs, skinny jeans, tight cardie, neck scarf, etc... he nudges me and goes, "Look, a black fella that dresses like you. He must be gay or something."

Ah yes, the old "anybody who dresses up in any way must be gay" line... well now that everyone's dressing like that, I'm sure my boyfriend gets far fewer "faggot"s hurled at him in Bushwick...although he's on the UWS now mostly...

I just got this scarf:

And one kind of like this, 70s chanel Jewish grandma, but without leopard on it, it's no longer there so it must be popular:

I also got a pair of dark purple and bright purple-magenta jeans and around 10 long baggy tanktops for spring including these:

I think the implication was more racist than homophobic: if a white guy dresses like that then he's just a bit hipsterish/girly, but for a black guy (who is supposed to be BUTCH remember!) to dress like that... he must not be hanging out with other, "normal" black guys. This all makes my mate sound terrible, but there was no intended malice in the comment, just a jumble of preconceptions, really.

I just assume that they're fetishists and I just havent been invited to attend their seedy nightclubs where they, y'know, set up tents with each other and drink real ale and stuff yet. I await the invite with baited breath though.

I can't wait for my rambling/real ale/chunky knits/hair-growing-out-of-my-ears phase, bring it on!

Yeah, definitely, the threshold for how much tight clothing you can wear without being called a fag is definitely lower for black men.

no no, chunky knits for middle aged guys is cool... especially in the british isles... as are tweed jackets with elbow patches, smoking roll ups or pipes, hanging out at the library all day, etc...

or not even a full on irish famer look, this is perfectly acceptable:

what needs to avoided is this look:

The single most Pacific Northwest thing you can do (besides overuse of the phrase 'you betcha!') is to wear denim shorts with white sport socks pulled all the way up as far as they will go.

i had a fleece---unfortunately, it was black and was a cat-hair magnet.
northface is a uniform over here; i suppose it works as a cloak of invisibility, just add baseball cap of local sports team----instant incognito

i got a mention in a recent Newsweek article about workwear redux

Fleeces are preferrable to permanent use of North Face type gear I reckon (though obv the latter are handy if you're acutally hiking, camping etc.). You can get some nice looking fleeces and some crap ones.
I'm a big fan of things like heavy overcoats if they're done well though. Sober and wintery but stylish is the way forward for male dressing I reckon.

What do you all think of this vintage 70s disco shirt? My fashion-obsessed girlfriend thinks it's a bit musty, but I'm thinking of picking it up anyway! The outlay would get me a quality made-to-measure shirt, so I'm kind of sitting on the fence still.

If you're not actually an effeminate black man, then it might be hard to pull it off.
;) :D

(If you are, then of course go for it!)

I like dodgy sweaters with stripes or other gaudy patterns or that look like it were bought by your aunt for you for christmas. You know, like what Blur used to wear in the 90s sort of.

I found the dodgiest knitted grey sweater in the clothes cemetary up at my cottage (for non-Canadians: little summer home on lake and often supply bunker for old junk). It looks like something you'd find on the floor of a thrift store but I took it anyway and now if I'm out wearing it people ask about it like they are genuinly interested.

I really like all that stuff, it's very hard for a man of any shape or size to look bad in it. I like the Redwing and the Edwin stuff that's out there, and Clarks are doing a nitty line in revamped desert boots, if you want to offset it with a bit of rasta chic. I just wish I had the money to buy it.
