The feeling me and Fat Jim got when we walked into the Barry Wetherspoons to wait for Craner to finish work was almost mystical. I don't think either of us had felt such a communal, accepting, wholesome spiritual energy before. We were healed. Made whole again. It was like touching the hem of Jesus' garment.

I'm not an expert on Craft in Budapest, but I've had the odd one and my general feeling about Craft styles in Central Europe is they just don't quite rate and they're still a bit pricy. I know a place though. It turns out some decent enough stuff on rotation at a reasonable rate - a large (probably 40cl, dunno for sure) double IPA for a little north of two squids, a 6% milk stout for a little south of the same. And yeah, it's nicer than a Spoons.

The macros do make some IPA and APA type beers - the Soproni APA is clumsy but it does deliver most of the notes one might expect and it's pretty cheap out of the shops so it's my street/park beer of choice.

Off topic, one of the supermarkers sometimes do an actually good ersatz Aperol for £3.50 and you can get a bottle of Prosecco for £2.25. So that was a fun Saturday night in with the missus.

Yeah there are plenty of nice enough Spoons, I'm not one of these Remainers who boycotts them by any means. My Mother is upset they made the veggie burger vegan.

I'm not talking about nice enough though. I'm talking about you feel like you just walked into a family reunion, and it's your family. The nicest one I know in London is the one Next to the DOCKLANDS museum, on the isle of dogs. Woops is devoted to the Rochester Castle in Stoke Newington

I'm biased but I love the Stratford one too, the Golden Grave. That's where my mum used to go for her vege burger.

Craft beer is lethally nice sometimes. Fortunately nothing would make me smoke cigarettes ever again.

Much as I like it something about the richness of flavour prevents overindulgence. I think this is maybe related to shite like Stella and Kronenburg getting you off your face in two pints so permanently concealing the off button

Wetherspoons are interesting. They vary enormously. Some feel very hostile. Some feel cursed. Some smell of death. But some have a warmth and almost a sense of community, a kind of inclusive family fun Butlins vibe, that you don't get anywhere else in the country anymore.

They remind me of a Hogarth engraving, especially when there's the whole cross section of society from young mums with toddlers all the way up to nonagerian gaffers.

But they can be anything from Beer Street to Gin Lane.

Weird thing with craft beer is I can only drink a few. 3, 4 tops. The days of necking 9000 Stellas are long gone.

Me too. It's very nice and pleasurable to drink - like a dessert with some of the porters - whereas stella is just..fine. If I do want to get wasted, then Stella does facilitate that quite nicely tho. It feels wrong to draw any other weapon, somehow
