films you've seen recently and would NOT recommend

I also watched Jerry Maguire for the first time ever on the weekend and that is a weird film we should talk about more. Everything Tom Cruise touches is always slightly off.

The Green Knight

Gawain (let’s call him Gavin), well you know the rest. This rude as fuck green cunt rides into King Arthur’s court while they’re eating and offers up a ridiculous challenge. It has spectacular sound design in this scene, but the Green Knight is voiced by that cunt from the Office who does Drew Pritchard and ruins it from there

A mate thought it was ok. Thought it was ridiculous personally, Gavin’s journey isn’t represented with any panache. The Leek Hills don’t feature. Game of Thrones has fucked this genre for at least another 25 years. It’s an epic piece of literature, possibly best served by a narrator and/or animation, not cloaks and ridiculous facial hair. Import tale for Stan in that experience, empathy and temporality are a stranger brew than you can ever imagine (plot spoiler averted)
Haven't seen the film, and haven't read it since high school, but I can start to appreciate, incomprehensively, how empathy can stretch beyond my comprehension. I'm inclined to view empathy as something that can be leveraged in critical ways, if handled with sophistication and care. Making certain psychic impacts that transcend or make even disintegrate logic.

But that is more of a systematic and strategic apprehension of empathy, whereas really it seems like a more profound approach would involve certain abandons of logic and certain embraces of feelings and other such forces more primal than logic.

Sounding more and more like an android Mr Spock trying to make sense of earth

Stan could wander a strange land, ride a lass behind the back of a very generous soul who saves you from the wilds and then undergo a time loop to see what could have been, which is code for whether you have the cajones to complete end of game level boss kill and the empathy developed within such a process

aka alchemy and the philosophers stone motif or Joseph Campbell

A shame as I’d been looking forward to it as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a cornerstone text for me - I did my dissertation on it many years ago. The reviews have generally not been kind. Birtwhistle did an opera based on it but I know fuck all about opera.

he looks like a caricature of a leading man and has this stilted quality to his acting. gives everything he's in this slight air of comedy. I think it worked to his advantage playing an antagonist in Collateral

Plough into it. It sounds good. Other half on nights so put headphones on to try and make out more detail without waking the kids up, which sort of worked. I was looking forward to it too

The Lords of Discipline.

It's alright... would have been better if Alan Clarke or Stanley Kubrick directed it.

A few years ago we were in one of the shopping malls they love so much here and at the end of a day of shopping we decided to take advantage of the cinema which these malls invariably have somewhere on the top floor. At the time, the only option that seemed even remotely worth seeing was this thing Venom with Tom Hardy... didn't really know what it was gonna be so we went in blind and, yeah, it was fine.

I don't remember much about it, sure it was pretty slight but I think it few good lines probably some decent action sequences, a couple of laughs. It wasn't The Bicycle Thieves but it wasn't X* either.

Today in almost exactly the same circumstances (except I was alone) I saw the sequel. However any similarities ended there,it was a truly terrible film, the one remarkable fact about it was, that for me at least, it was bad in a whole new way that I have not experienced before.

What I mean by that is that the film pushed me in two directions at once - on the one hand, it was so unenjoyable and tedious that after about five minutes I was longing for it to end, yet at the same time it was so thin and lacking in any of the things that traditionally make up a film such as plot, tension, excitement and so on, that when it finished I felt angrily short changed. How did they have the nerve to show thus to the public and pretend it was a complete thing.

A strange thing to be be both enraged and relieved by the film finishing do quickly. A phenomenon almost worth investigating except that I hope never to experience it again and I don't wish it on any of you. A phenomenon nest locked away and buried under the ice at the north pole with the hope noone ever uncovers it.

X* - I mean here that we need a film that is universally agreed to be terrible, not just dumb or whatever, but something that completely fails to deliver on its own terms as well as any other. Just as Citizen Kane is a shorthand for as near to a universally accepted masterpiece as we are ever going to get, is there anything which is reviled by audiences and critics alike and which avoided being accidentally rescued by becoming some kind of kitsch fav? Perhaps deserves a thread in its own right...

Dune. Put blue food colouring in my eyes this morning ready to watch in an empty home. Kids out, feet up, couple of croissants, bourgeois marmalade

Looks good for the first 15minutes or so. You even see a spaceship landing craft’s feet flex. Wow. Did you see the metal flex bruv? Then Beast Rabban showed up. Something weird about that actor’s forehead gradient. Oh god, it hits slowly - this is pants

Drifted for about 30mins and despite it being a day off, work calls started flooding so that’s the umpteenth day off ruined that I’ve had to work where the time owed is eventually converted to £. Couldn’t even fall asleep to it

the original Lynch Dune is a film that the gek-opel generation of posters would sometime claim was his best film, they were being either ironic provocative or bizarre

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I hadn't seen it in a while and I dunno that I'll ever watch it again. It's still impressive in terms of how well they managed to capture the feel of the book, but, more than anything, I just found it dull and irritating this time around. I'll have to reread the book at some point to see whether it's the film specifically that's the problem or the whole thing; I tried rereading Kingdom of Fear recently and couldn't be arsed at all. The voice was too affected.

One thing that's interesting is that both Lynch and Villeneuve seemed to run out of energy at the same point - Lynch dealt with that by making the second half last about five minutes with lots of "and five years later this happened" type voiceovers that completely fail to convey any sense of time passing, while Villeneuve went "fuck it I'll stop here and do another film".

Not seen this film in years and I agree with your point generally but the Mission Impossible series (from 4 onwards) redeems Cruise for me x1000. Also Edge of Tomorrow/Live.Die.Repeat.

The main thing that redeems Tom Cruise for me is that he belongs to the Big Nose crew. We are a select bunch who understand each other.
