feeling some of that azuli thing quite a bit. enjoying the carl craig-lite of Tyken. cant go wrong with a nice arpeggio! a lot of the first cd sounds like ppl who've listened to a lot of Get Physical etc though. not that thats necessarily a bad thing i guess.

haha Mouth 2 Mouth?! how out of place

That Tyken track is cool. I like the Ben Macklin remix of 'Everybody' also. CD is good value for money if you have digital dj-ing capabilities.

I was in HMV in Oxford, UK the other day and there is a whole section devoted to hip hop compilations that feature that Westwood (or a variation thereof) bloke on the cover. It was quite a sight and really stood out from the other sections in there. Pure dark colours and cars.

There is a also a fairly narrow rulebook when it comes the videos for hip hop. I find the lack of imagination with these (over several years now) slighty perverse and disturbing. The marketing departments are only interested in sales though and (teenage boys & impressionable girls?) must be buying this shit so I guess they just keep rehashing it and shovelling it into the back of distribution trucks. Surely this must come to an end soon. Doesn't look good for the artists/labels who are licensing their tracks to go on there. Makes a mockery of the true values of the scene imo.

I did however pick up an Stones Throw compilation hidden amongst all that MTV tat that is actually pretty decent:

No, not at all - I'm really happy Friday came round so quick!

Whilst I agree that a lot house music comp cds are packaged with a particular manga'd-up FHM aesthetic in mind, I also think compilations of any genre suffer from all being designed the same way. Particularly hip hop - you know the photoshop collages you get. I was reminded of this looking at the cover of Black Milk's latest. It did tick a few boxes.

But anyway, back to house.. ooh.. bitchy girl in big sunglasses.. looking at me, sipping her drink.. I might go and dance near her

Right....I've dabbled with house but it has never really set me a fire the way other genres have.

Can anybody recommend me an online mix of nice house - i like some of the Moodyman ones on Boomkat and i was loving the selection Rust played on some of his Rinse FM shows if naybody caught them. Really nice and textured and a couple had vaguely 'tribal' percussion and singing but in a way that sounded class not cheesy.

Ta.

The ripperton resident advisor podcast is worth checking out:

nice and deep, bit of house, bit of techno. It sounded good at 2am last night when i got it anyhow...

http://www.deephousepage.com/search_results.php

i can reccomend the second one down on that list as a good mix of fairly "classic" house.

That's a fairly short but good mix of stuff some people are calling"fidget house" though i dont' really like the name, Good music though, stuff by people like Jesse Rose and Switch.

For more of that Detroit flavour of house, Omar S records are always worth hearing. FXHE records I think is his label. Slow BPM with an olde style sensibility.

The Villalobos mix of Beck’s ‘Cellphone’s Dead’! The first two minutes are his deep-housiest so far, I think. Too long, though.

Shame Dixon's RA mix: http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=48 is no longer available. Best mix I've heard in an age which really quite surprised me. Got a real laidback feel to it. I'll try and bang it up somewhere over the weekend and post a link. Well worth it.

Check out Jena Paradies' DJs Anonymous mix here: http://www.djsanonymous.org/page/2/ (number 14). A mixed bag but I really like it. Worth downloading for John Mustang's Intoyapants (around the 22:00 mark) alone which is the deeeeepest of deep house (and also available as an mp3 from Beatport for the full effect).

'lobos? never! heh.

Red-Eye - Red Session Sampler
Shows the filter house thing can still be fresh. Also like that Wize mix of Sunshine on Red Session...

For some more underground stuff, what about the singles on Footloversmusic by Eddy T, The Gians, Danny Alpha, and Raiko Matta. Some great stuff happening there.

Eddy T - "Millaenya" from the Acid Communication EP. Practically Belgian degrees of mentalness.

I can't stand when people do this.

On topic: I think when it comes to house music, I find myself looking for something that has a lot of warm, heavy bass and has an intensity that you find in other dance music genres. This is why I liked 4x4 garage so much: it was summer-y, had that four on the floor, but also had that frenetic energy that makes it hype in a club, which is why it's no surprise that grime emerged out of it.

I should like electro (and do sometimes) because of the big b-lines, but I find it hard to get down with what I find to be a limited palette of sounds. I also am not a fan of big jagged square synths either. The sound does my head in. That Ramirez remix of the Bodyrox tune that they play in the background of every commercial on Rinse FM is really catchy though. You could call that electro right? It's weird to me people call that funky.

I tend to still really enjoy the euphoric, groovy disco-esque shit - is that what you would call funky house if you were actually talking about funky house?

Me too, I've never done it before, I don't know what came over me.

I'm a fan of house from the mid-90s. That garage swing (Mood II Swing, Kerri Chandler, Masters dubs) sound that does sound old fashioned now but still works when it's played loud.

I only said that so I could point out that the latest Strictly re-release is one of my favourites: Bass Tone by Sole Fusion. It's a Lil' Louie Vega pseudonym and it has excellent smashing glass noises all through it.
