Minimal house anthems

i hear talk of there being quite a bit of ketamine in berlin but honestly i haven't seen evidence of it. (never tried it and don't want to.) as far as i can tell you'll see most of it at the extreme afters, like bar25, where the music sort of ceases to matter. plenty of E and coke in berlin.

barcelona's club scene is phenomenal at first glance, but when you live there, it gets a bit old pretty fast. first of all, we don't have the closing times berlin does - everything closes at 5 or 5:30 on the dot. given that spaniards don't go out until 2 (at the earliest) or 3 (more like it), that doesn't give parties much of a chance to go off. there are some afters, but the ones i went to were really gross -- a lot of fucked up guys trying to hit on girls, and not much more. actually i remember one such after i went to and the DJs literally weren't even beatmatching their records. it was terrible.

i do like the clubs (loft, nitsa etc) but i wish there were more of them -- i don't feel like going those places more than once a month or so. there's a real lack of mid-sized clubs (say, 200-400 people) with decent sound systems. and there's also a lack of private/underground/illegal warehouse parties and afters, especially for techno. (the squat scene seems to have quite a few parties but they're predictably more of a crusty/traveller bent, and i'm afraid my tastes are too bougie for that.) i think the best thing we have in barcelona is the beach parties on sundays, which go from mid-afternoon til midnight or so. lovely.

i was in berghain a few weeks ago,its a great club, incredible sound system and the people there all seemed like a laugh...

unfortunately the music was a little disappointing, never really seemed to get going upstairs (jeff samuel and triple r were playing, both people who i've heard stuff from before that i really liked) and downstairs someone who i later found out to be dominic eulberg,to my great surprise, was playing, but he literally didn't seem to know how to mix,he'd be playing some cracking tune and the next one would come in out of time and then once it got going he'd start fucking around with the EQ and emphasize all the wrong parts at the wrong time.maybe he was on ketamine!

i think it was just an off night musically,i'd definitely like to go back there.

one tip for getting in is don't go in in a group of more than two or three,i know some people who were turned away because they were in a group,or so it seemed.they seem to be kind of pricks about who they let in,they nearly didn't let me in (and i couldn't look more harmless if i tried) but luckily my friend waited by the door and came out and said i was with her when they stopped me. there was a guy beside me in the queue (which lasted over an hour) who they didn't let in,when he asked why he was told "because we choose" and that was it.

also i think its only saturday that techno is on,its actually a gay club with a mixed crowd for the techno, from looking at the flyers it seems the rest of the week its a very hardcore gay club with each night catering to a very specific, and very explicit, sexual interest.i wonder how often bewildered groups of minimal fans end up at a farmer fetish night by accident!

yeh i read some stuff about the bouncers being very choosy...is this the case at other berlin clubs as well? I'd love to go to jesse rose's partys at the panaroma bar.

the bouncers are indeed choosy. i've had friends fail to get in and it really, truly sucks. there's nothing you can do about it, either. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to whom they choose -- appears largely arbitrary.

i haven't ever seen bouncer action like that at watergate or weekend, but i've generally been on the list there so i wouldn't know firsthand.

lol yeah, there were all sorts of weird nights listed on a flyer i picked up there, that was the one that really stood out though

haha farmer fetish, i could almost get into that :p

that's shitty about the bouncers. guess i'll just have to become an internationally famous techno dj.

I've never been to Pressure, no, weirdly. the 3am thing puts me off but I can't really justify going down to London *again* (been to Fabric too many times in the past year and a half).

VV, I wouldn't be surprised if they have an afters again.

EDIT: oh yeah, the cost puts me off too!

Is Pressure a regular night, i had no idea it was part of some other night. I would love to go to an afterparty, we'll see if my body permits me! It was expensive but i just grinned and bore it, an extra fiver for a big night isn't too bad.

Big up Dissensus raving crew eh!

yeh pressure is on every month, their lines up vary from really really good to just pish. are there regularly organised after parties in glasgow do you know? i live here and there is a late night party scene but its more the gay arty crowd, people who used to know franz etc. pretty blah. i'm gonna go down the bank today and extend my blessed student overdraft so i can get tickets, i'm just hoping someone i know is going as well. My mates aren't really big into villalobos. if not then i suppose i'll just have to get fucked and dance on my own.

I went to Berghain in January as part of a large stag party (20 blokes), which we expected to be problematic; but a couple of us went in advance, had a chat with the bouncers, and they were totally cool. Even when one of the group forgot what he looked like and tried to buy some drugs off him

Contrast that with the next evening, when we all turned up en masse to Watergate, with the first arrivals getting stereotypically agro with the bouncer.

I think, as in most things in life, if you treat the bouncers at Berghain like a human being and show a bit of respect, you'll be fine. Oh, and speaking a bit of the local lingo helps too.

yeah I meant Pressure in Glasgow is expensive. I don't think Fabric is too pricey at all when it's open until 9am with three rooms (although I never really pay). there won't be an afterparty in Glasgow involving Villalobos, I doubt there will be an organised afterparty at all. (Scottish licensing laws are the worst).

in London though, you can basically plan on there being an afterparty, so if you're interested, pace yourself. you can tell if it's in room 3 afterwards cos the bouncers won't start shoving everyone out at closing, as they normally do. just hang around the 'VIP' room entrace and watch out for someone handing out tickets...

This is how it struck me as well. Nicely dressed, harmless and sober looking people being turned away for no reason... Oh well, Germans and their discrimination

I've got to say, this club you're all on about sounds like my personal techno nightmare. If you took all the elements of techno I dislike - the side that is vaucous, globalised, deracinated, apoliticised, insular Houellebequan consumer fodder - and put it in a single physical location, this would be it.

I especially loved this...

I came away from our meeting convinced that the Berghain, far from being merely yet another lifestyle option, stands firmly at the vanguard of electronic dance music.

Dude, the whole point of going out is to have fun with your friends. If the club won't let them in, that is a black mark that no positive can allay! I don't care if it's like the court of emperor Nero on stilts.

All joking aside, clubs are about punters, not about shitty hierachys or who-knows-who. Closing scenes off like this makes for moody, uptight clubs and dull music that doesn't go anywhere.

I'm making a minor habit of derailing minimal threads with carping, so I'm sorry, but this just seems really fucked up and I couldn't let it stand. I was gearing up for a big rant, but went for a minor sulk instead. Ignore the old git in the corner etc etc.

yeah the bouncer who looks like the devil, with tattoos all over his face, is a right pr**k. i've got in fine four or five times, but was turned away once with no reason given (and ich spreche deutsch, too...). all i would say in their defence is: once you're in, anything goes, and it's not like the end or fabric or pretty much every other club in ldn where you have to look over yr shoulder every time you roll a spliff....

never had any problems at all watergate. and if you haven't experienced the floating stage at sunrise on a summer's morning...

back on topic: the new(ish) gummihz on mobilee is effing great....ruidos y frequencias 2 is pretty good, if not quite as mindblowingly great as ryf 1...also loving styro 2000's "passfahrt" on motoguzzi: more wonky swiss madness!

anyone know if galoppierende zuversicht have anything in the pipeline?

I'm pretty much with you on that. Every time people talk about the Berghain this comes up and it certainly puts me off the place. To me it seems to be against the whole spirit of what clubbing, techno etc is all about.

"vaucous, globalised, deracinated, apoliticised, insular Houellebequan consumer fodder"
What does that mean?
