During the trial, Lund said that his wife, who suffered depression and had attempted suicide five times since the mid-1970s, was "complicated".

Along these lines, she should have been arrested decades ago for attmpted murder - of herself.

What do you think it'll take? A serving Prime Minister with an elderly relative suffering a painful and incurable disease?

Nah, more like one of the tabloid's editors mums. My partner's well involved with this debate from quite a high up medical position, and it's just a matter of time before it goes through, as long as we keep the christians off the debate and slip it through parliament without the tabloids going apeshit. Everyone wants it legal, it's just a matter of doing it without causing too much fuss...that's the problem.

She wasn't that elderly (65) and was suffering from an annoying and treatable condition. Irritable bowel syndrom is not something to commit suicide over, her death probably had far more to do with her depression. In that is a strong argument against euthanasia, as depression can be treated as well (by medicine or family, different discussion).
It is legal where I live (Netherlands), although it's rarely done as physicians are extremely cautious.
Personally I think it should only be reserved for extreme cases.

How can you possibly judge how severe her illness was? It must have been pretty bad if it was the main cause of her depression (though of course there may have been other factors involved too). I'm sure she'd tried all sorts of treatments - you don't just wake up one morning with a minor ailment and decide to top yourself, do you?

More importantly, this is about the right of people to decide when they no longer want to live. If her life was miserable, and there was no forseeable way to improve it, I think it's a fucking outrage that her husband has had to commit a criminal act that has earned him a long jail sentence by doing the only thing he could to help her, particularly as she was apparently of sound mind and had made the decision herself. You don'y have to be mad to commit suicide: if your life is awful, it can be the only sane thing to do.
