As suggested by Blackdown in the Record Industry in Decline thread, I've set up a poll to quantify the Dissensus massive's interest in and engagment with hard media and/or soft media. I realize that the choices are somewhat limited, but try to push your ass squarely into one of the round holes.

OK I voted for 50/50 mix.

But what I actually do is buy records and encode them to high bitrate mp3 for the purposes of listening on my walkman.

I have never paid for an mp3. Any mp3 I have got for free that is good, I try to find vinyl of it and make a better mp3 for walkman use.

So I could equally have said "vinyl forever" cos I can't imagine buying an mp3, or I could've said "i use mp3 to preview my vinyl buying" etc etc.

I use mp3 for on the move and vinyl for listening at home & DJing.

Sorry to be such a contrary sod.

No worries edward. I kind of expected responses like that. I listen almost exclusively to mixes on my Sansa, so I don't exactly fit either. The problem with polls is that if you have too many options, they become statistically meaningless. I chose a nice spread of 5 (extremes at either end with a middle ground) just to keep things simple.

As I said in the other poll I have bought MP3s but I do buy way more CDs. I'll generally rip my CD purchases to my Nano. I'll admit I listen to my Ipod more than my hi-fi these days....

there are no accidents
cds and esp. vinyl is only good for people staying in the same place, atleast country... mp3 and digital dj software only solution for globe trotters.

i'm delighted we're doing this but i would like to point out that Dissensian's are by no way representative of the music buying public (if we were, the industry wouldnt be in this mess!). :)

MP3s on my computer = 95% of my listening.
MP3s on my MP3-player (not one of those cheesy IPods, thank you very much) = 4% of my listening (mostly podcasts, actually).
CDs on my parents’ ghetto blaster (= suburbia blaster) = 1% of my listening.

Most of the time, I find the amplifier and the soundcard the bottlenecks rather than the reduced quality of the MP3 (the exception’s being when playing the MP3 over a club rig), so I’m not that concerned with sound quality issues.

Providing MP3s are 160kbps or above, I literally don't care what format the music comes in. I never buy MP3s tho, if I'm going to buy music I'd quite like a nice hard copy of the artwork.

So in other words, you haven’t got a clue. Pathetic.

I don't buy records on majors, fuck em, the likes of Pharrell and Mariah can survive if I download their tunes now and again. Small labels and musicians I will support with the purchase of twelves and CDs, and I also donate to web labels and acts that give away mps for nothing.

these days the only mp3s i tend to listen to are promo things friends send me. tonight the decks are turned off and i'm checking some 320s on the lappy whilst supping on a couple of tins of guinness

oh, and mixes as well, of course...shout-out to the blogariddims crew...season 2's gonna be massive!!
