best house music post-1992

BROADSIDE
Hardrive - Deep Inside

Kings of Tomorrow - Finally

Jon Cutler - It's Yours

This is a silly question. There's just too much!

There's just too much!

i think the pickings are probably pretty slim, which is why i posed the question . . . .

"hardrive" represents for me the decline and fall of house -- a massive international house hit and yet such a boring boring boring deep deep deep down inside me song -- pretends to be soulful, done by rote

other crappy pseudo classics from the year 93 =

--the good men, "give it up"
--jaydee, "plastic dreams"
--funky green dogs, "reach for me"

cajual is the mid-90s house label to collect, though the horrendous "percolator" should be avoided at all costs -- braxton holmes was the best producer on cajual -- so much sass and swing and gay gospel disco soul

but aside from cajual, what else is there?

--relief, as i stated upthread, is too hard and techy
--guidance is too deep and pious
--pierre and felix housecat are lesser versions of green velvet

--which leaves the question of the smaller chicago labels

san francisco i just don't really know -- not impressed w/ the grayhound label or "20 minutes of disco glory" -- it's all a bit bland and middle of the road

as for the bigger name sf labels -- Om Records and Naked music -- i have to say i've never taken much of an interest, which means there's probably a few tracks on these labels worth hunting down -- or maybe not?

as far as new york and new jersey go, i suppose King Street is always worth a listen, but who knows . . . . balihu, aside from daniel wang's debut, not what it's cracked up to be. environ very very boring. rong i'm investigating . . . .

and not to attack woebot unprovoked, but mauve house . . . . really? eh, i suppose the isolee album makes for nice background music from time to time

so, ahem, i think the pickings are slim

but here's another good if short-lived label from 93 = miss girl records

I really like Paul Johnson's "Hear The Music" (but just the track, the rest of the EP sucks). The guy made tons of music but everything else I hear from him is either boring or really minimal tracky stuff.

DJ Sneak - Can't Hide From Your Bud
Gusto - Disco's Revenge

^--- These are probably the kind of obvious stuff you don't care for and they are just disco loopers.

Steve Bug - You Make Me Feel (spare but efficient)
Nick Holder - Summer Daze (the track itself...has a Pat Metheny sample.)

I don't know why you are disqualifying the Detroit stuff. There's some house on KDJ (for example) that is pretty indistinguishable from the Chicago stuff.

Nah. There were just as many good records being put out in 93-99 than in the late 80s. There's just a lot more shite to wade through.

cajual is the mid-90s house label to collect, though the horrendous "percolator" should be avoided at all costs -- braxton holmes was the best producer on cajual -- so much sass and swing and gay gospel disco soul

Also check Glenn Underground - Beyond on Cajual. His music was so deep, they said it was six feet underground, and the name stuck.

For the most part, yes, but there are some great house tracks knocking around on Relief releases if you look for them. Ditto Dance Mania. All the chicago producers made house at some point, even the nail hard ones like DJ Funk.

--guidance is too deep and pious
--pierre and felix housecat are lesser versions of green velvet

Agree about guidance but what about it's predecessor, Prescription? This for example is one of the finest house records ever made. Seriously, even if you sleep on all my other recs, get this one. Absolutely mauve as you like.

--which leaves the question of the smaller chicago labels

Kumba were run out of Florida and were part of Nitebeat, but they released a lot of stuff by old Chicago heads. My personal rec is the DJ X-ray EP (which is Roy Davis Jnr under a pseudonym).

Other random bits I've found:

Underground Evolution - Afro Cuban High

Pepe Bradock - Life

G.O.D. Limited - Untitled Mid 90s Grant Nelson label. Grant Nelson is the best UK house producer by miles, a real unsung hero.

Scan 7 - Password Soul Breaking the 'no Detroit' rule but this one always slips through the net cos it's on UR, as does...

Red Planet - Sex In Zero Gravity

Eddie Amador - House Music Biggie but a goodie

Sfere - The Lost Tribes Of Ibidan

But, yeah, the two totally essential every-home-should-have ones are the Prescription thing and G.O.D. Limited.

Wholeheartedly agree about prescription underground. Later releases a little dull but Ron Trent - Foot Therapy EP :D
Can't believe DJ Pierre is being knocked. Wild Pitch rules. Darkman - Annihilating Rhythm, Phuture - Rise from your grave, Music.
DJ Duke - Blow your whistle
Junior Vasquez - X
Eddie Foulkes - Sex in Zero gravity
Underground Resistance - Ocean to Ocean , Jupiter Jazz
Ron Trent - Altered States
Djaimin - Give me

The beardy stuff started in 93, idjut boys - not reggae, harveys ministry comp.

My favourite Danny tenaglia, The Look - Glamour Girl

good call on prescription records, though i think the record to have on the label is "make it happen (make it real)"

blackdown mentioned romanthony upthread, another good call, and he just happens to have had the first record on prescription -- a re-release of the wanderer off his obscure label black male records

I asked my friend who likes the West Coast stuff and here's what he said:

I dunno man, I had to think about this a little bit because nothing came to
me right away. I like all the West Coast stuff I have because a lot of it
blends together and nothing really jumps out as a big time classic. It's
just all got a strong and similar vibe, you know what I mean? But here's a
couple:

Simon - Two Crates
DJ Garth & ETI - 20 Minutes Of Disco Glory
Metro - To A Nation Rockin/Stone Skipping
Second-Hand Satellites - Multiple Mirrors EP

Non-SF -

Ron Trent, Joshua, Abacus, Chez Damier - Foot Therapy EP
Chocolate City - Love Songs
Jerome Sydenham, Dennis Ferrer - Sandcastles

ha! lol. no worries dom. great thread btw. i was waiting to be torn apart by the house heads after that...but nothing seemed to happen. i could't pretend to be anything other than an outsider vis a vis house music but (perhaps like you) feeling the fascination at the moment. will be taking notes at this thread!

MD Express "God Made Me Phunky" (Mike Dunn rules, done loads of great stuff)

Foremost Poets "Moonraker", "Reasons To Be Dismal" (Johnny Dangerous...sick...though "Reasons.." is pre-92 actually, soz)

what about Johnny Vicious, Vicious Music out of New York? did some great stuff...remix of Shades Of Love's "Body To Body" is an OTT diva belter..."Activator" is classic too, real lairy aggro NY house...as is "Brooklyn A-Train" under name Houztown...truly scary house track with a Prince sample in it

...these were my golden years musically really...I forget just how big a part of my life house was, 92 till prolly more like 97-98ish where I had veered more into techno, at least DJing wise. if i rack my brains i'll be able to think of LOADS.

Dunno about the moniker but mauve house is on the money. All about the genre fuzzification, subtle or not so subtle cross-pollination, eclecticism...
