Bring out the vacuum
Did a free EP a while back (done 3 solo CDs in the past) - basically cheery, kinda scuffed about, downtempo stuff. On the longest-running net label, Monotonik.

Hopefully those who like ruder sounds might like the bass bump on the first track... was written for an offshoot of Jahtari that hasn't come to fruition yet - the sublabel was supposed to be focused on applying dub techniques to other genres.

Everything produced in Audiomulch. Definitely the best software I've come across for the price, although it's most flexible with some kind of MIDI sequencing VST nested inside it.

Darned cockwombles.
Thought I'd flag up that soundware.co.uk are selling Native Instruments' Komplete 5 package (contains Reaktor, Battery, Absynth etc etc) for £350 instead of £750 at the moment. I'm seriously considering it - anyone got it and care to give advice on whether it's worth it?

I bought Komplete 2 when it first launched (2004?), but just updated a few of the plugs individually over the years since then (Kontakt, Absynth and FM8). The full updates to the full Komplete package are usually a bit too pricey for me.

I don't really use any of them all that much any more. NI software tends to have little quirks that bother me and I have enough alternatives now: Logic's bundled instruments, Synplant, Microtonic, Sylenth...

If you don't really have much choice by the way of instruments at the moment, it certainly provides an affordable way to get lots of new toys.

One thing to bear in mind is that Native Instruments have these big blow-outs when they're on the verge of releasing new versions. Not totally sure what Komplete 6 might add though - Maschine perhaps?

You can save a little bit extra (£20ish) by getting it from Thomann, by the way:

just saying...

what people do is up to them, but just becuase plugins are easy to get hold of for free, it doesn't mean that there are no consequences to this choice.

It's obviously a grey area, as big companies are less likely to suffer than passionate geeks trying to make ends meet doing what they love, and of course the fact that anyone with a pc can get high quality gear regardless of financial background is a wonderful thing.

But certainly I think the issue is worth more thought than 'you can get them for free so why pay'.

I think the N.I. offer is worth looking at. You don't have to spend megabucks to support people investing energy into creating high quality instruments, as offers like that can come around, and there are some very friendly independant people with supportive pricing structures lurking about. (e.g. http://www.ddmf.eu/ ).

RE: Komplete offer. I find N.I. to be a slightly weird company. Obviously with quite high commercial motivations these days. But their products are unquestionably of very high quality even if you might not get the personal touch that smaller plugin guys offer (e.g. www.u-he.com) . Definitely worth downloading a demo and trying them out. Reaktor is infinitely deep. FM8 is very highly regarded, and I've heard good things about the other stuff too. Depending on your needs there's a pretty reasonble chance that you could buy this package and never have to use other software (excluding a host) again.

Beast of Burden
I bought Logic. I had the crack for ages. But I wanted the better reliability that the updates confer, and all the content was useful too, especially things like the impulse responses, so the presets work properly.

The NI stuff is not that easy to torrent on the Mac AFAICT...

The real decision is what you invest your time in learning. The financial investment is trivial in comparison.

NI stuff is great and well worth the money imo (allthough I couldnt justify it). I think if you're making money or putting out commercial releases it is important to support the companies.

i've got komplete 5, got it for free (legitimately), it's really good i think, though i've barely scratched the surface of stuff that's in there. i'm not really that technical and i've found that the various instruments and samplers etc in there aren't all that intuitive to use, you can't just open them up and use them easily, it definitely takes a lot of manual-reading time (though maybe that's just me). Reaktor I just don't understand at all, it frightens me. The prophet-5 emulation is really nice though, i use that a lot, battery can be pretty cool, kontakt is obviously good... it's all pretty good really, but i was just so used to using the stuff i already had that i kind of got bored of trying to learn all the NI stuff and so i've kind of neglected it and I hardly use it now to be honest. Grievous is absolutely right when he says the time you spend learning is the real investment, if you spend time actually learning how to use all the komplete stuff properly i reckon it's well worth £350.

Speaking of contact, I bought it for a PowerPC based machine. Now I got an Intel based Mac, can I upgrade for free or do I need to buy a new copy?

Depends which version you have. All versions since 2.2 are Universal Binary (i.e. they will work on both PPC and Intel Macs).

The only issue you will have to face is NI's irritating "Service Center" software. You will need to unauthorize your PPC machine and then re-register the software on your Intel machine.

Posting up direct links to warez is a bit dodgy Zhao, and could get the people that own and maintain this forum in a lot of trouble.
