You using a Mac? On PC laptops the built in Firewire can often be problematic for audio. USB2.0 is preferable imo.

If you do want Firewire these are supposed to sound wonderful for the money, and the built in monitor controller is very handy: http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardw...re-audio-interface-and-monitor-control--48578

For USB I'd check out the Native Instruments Kontrol 1, though it seems to have gone up a bit recently.

I'm sure you'll get tons of recommends...

I like my MOTU Ultralite. Seems to be the most simple high-quality soundcard. It's also very compact and robust - great for playing live. I've used it to do quadrophonic stuff live, which was pretty cool.

Yeah I'm on a Mac, so Firewire definitely seems like the way to go.
I asked a friend about this and he was bigging up the Apogee Duet. It certainly looks very nice, but it's a lot more than that TC one. Given that I'm currently using a headphone jack into shitty all-in-one hifi speakers I imagine pretty much anything will sound amazing.

i also have one of these and i definitely agree.. especially the bit about it being robust... mine's had quite a beating and never given even the slightest bit of trouble...

Also, some of you might dig my bass music production techniques blog, which just went online: www.makesomebass.wordpress.com.

Producers give 300-500 words on how they made a track. Profiles from Philthkids/Teddy Shuckles, Ill Cosby and myself, with more coming in coming weeks from Autopilot, Komodo, I.D. and more.

thanks!

Does anybody on here use Reaper?

Was going to splash out on something pricier but it looks quite capable.

Yes, I reckon Reaper is great and definitely does the job. I'm not using it now, because I've been using another product for ages that I'm still happy with, but for most people's needs I reckon it's a very good option.

The only reason I'd spend any more would be if I were thinking of collaborating with other people and wanted something "standard" - which I guess is an indirect way of saying "the only reason I'd buy Ableton Live is if I wanted to collaborate with other people, cos seems like everyone uses that". :0

It's alll about the .wav (with the bpm in the file name) sharing.

Yeah, do you mean loops / layers / parts of the track though? Cos that's what I find trickiest. Have had most success splitting stuff up like that and basically agreeing in advanced who's going to do the mix (if you're not in the same place).

Have found dropbox really useful for this kind of collaboration. You can set up some shared folders on each person's computer and just drag and drop stuff in to sync it up.

It really doesn't matter, it's all about what you both decide to be easier.
