Computer Games Blogs

Hello. Are there any good blogs out there about computer games? I don't mean big, corporate US ones, but nice, little personal blogs about gaming. Maybe something with a bit of humour too. Does that kind of thing exist?

I liked Poisonous Darts' top 50 NES games (cant find link but it wasnt long ago), and throughsilver's top 10 games ever.

I want to post a bit more about video games actually. I'm on a spree of downloading all the old Lucas Arts point n clicks (I had most of them on CD but those things are scratched beyond belief) so I have something to distract me from my forthcoming dissertation...

No Doom? No Quake? No Gauntlet? No Worms?

No LEMMINGS?!?!?!? :mad:
this guy is a newbie - theres nothing prior to 1989, and computer games were round for decades prior to that. his number one is a complete fucking mystery to me and i consider myself a gamer.

you've honestly never heard of Final Fantasy?

It's a list of someone's favourite games complimented with good writing; I think that's preferable to an attempt at a 'definitive' historical list of games.

ff? must have scrolled past without looking at the title, lol. yes i have heard of it, but its not one of my favourites. cut-scene hell, turgid scripting and rpg cliches.

i guess half the fun is disagreeing anyway - but its a bit of an odd list which says more about the authors age than his predilicitons imo.

Here's my top 10:

1) Olympic Soccer - PS1 - Alan Green narrates gloriously bug-laden banana ball bonanza
2) Streets of Rage - MD - beating up your partner
3) Gran Turismo - PS2 - why the Nissan Skyline is the mid-life crisis motor
4) Monkey Business - itbox - diligent simian with a citrus allergy
5) Madden 92 - MD - careless ambulance driver prolongs the agony
6) Gran Theft Auto - PS2 - rocket launchers go boom
7) Pro Evo Soccer - Xbox360 - the graphics catch up with the gameplay
8) Goldeneye - N64
9) Civilization 2 - PC
10) Soul Blade - I've never had such an easy victory

In no particular order:

* Half-Life I & II - actually, these are probably no. 1 (1997-2004) (PC)
* The Quakes I-III (not played QIV) (1996-1999) (PC)
* Doom II (1994) (PC)
* Lemmings (1991) (Atari ST, motherfuckers! :))
* Worms (1994-1995) (the original, plus Reinforcements - not the sequels) (PC)
* Xenon II (1989) (Atari ST)
* Unreal Tournament (1999) (PC)
* Repton III (1986) (erm, Acorn Electron...)
* Descent I & II (1995-1996) (PC)
* Gauntlet II (1986) (Atari ST)

Edit: plus the usual obligatory classics, Street Fighter II, Tetris, Space Invaders...was never into Mario or Sonic, though. Oh, and Llamatron fucking rocked! :D

FF6 was SNES, so there wasn't much in the name of cut scenes. unless you got the PS1 remake, which was a bit naff...

Personally if I did a top twenty the oldest things in it would be Monkey Island (1990) and Super Mario Bros (1985 in the US I think). I think it's a bit far-fetched to be surprised at someone's favourite games not featuring anything pre-Mario...

Cor nice thread. Never even thought about what my top 10 video games might be. I haven't really been into gaming for a long time now but here's some good stuff that immediately springs to mind.

Cosmic Guerilla (Arcade)
Moon Cresta (Arcade)
3D Defender (ZX 81)
Dragontorc Of Avalon (ZX Spectrum)
3D Deathchase (ZX Spectrum)
Stunt Car Racer (Amiga)
Kick Off II (Amiga)
Gauntlet (Arcade)
Salamander / Nemesis (Arcade)
The American Football game on the Vectrex

I used to own a Vectrex :(

Actually this has now kicked off a whole load of reminiscences. :eek:

Including an extremely tenuous and absurd claim to fame.

Factory Girl
Just got myself one of those flash cards for my DS... already got a fair number of SNES games on there, as well as a port of the original Quake. Looking into chucking a few point n clicks on there too, for play around town. Great stuff.

So far Gauntlet is the only game to make it onto more than one person's list.

RED WIZARD NEEDS FOOD, BADLY! :D

It was a big deal when the big posh arcade on Oxford Street (Lon) got the first Gauntlet machine in the country (so they claimed anyway).

I have made the claim (usually when drunk and/or stoned) that Super Monkey Ball 2 for the gamecube is not only the greatest game ever made, but, in fact, the greatest single piece of software ever written. And I stand by this claim even when sober! Oh Aiai, you really do love bananas...

Aaargh, Gamecube games all look and sound as if they've been designed by and for someone on about six strongs Es...they're like distilled ADHD in software form. :confused:

theres a lot of snobbishness surrounding the appreciation of japanese games vs western titles too. a kind of popism for the games world maybe.

personally i prefer a bit of the old ultraviolence over dayglo cartoon characters engaged in meaningless and very silly activities, any day of the week.
