listening now for first time but i'm pretty sure this is going to hold up in longer runs:

VA - 'The Sound of Dub' Rare & Soundful Pearls From South Africa (Echo Beach 2005)

in terms of newdub/electronic dancehall/ragga/jungle/hiphop, this blows away the countless things in this vein i've encountered in years. sweet girl singers, afro badman rap, tasteful electronics, interesting beat patterns... clean and crisp, but with melodies... like IDM/downtempo pallette of sounds applied to non-annoying, and non-boring music. a few tracks are like if the Bug got over being so pissed off all the fuckin time. immediately satisfying and doesn't let up on the goodness.

almost approaching the final frontier: AFROCENTRIC DUBSTEP

???

Have you heard Ben Sharpa Zhao? he's pretty close to afrocentstep n all, more hiphop though, that compilation sounds great.

And yeah early Associates has the same ice-cold expressionism as Travelogue, only Billy could sing lol.

Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold

A charity shop punt (as most music purchases are for me) - Bjorky/Kate Bushy languid indietronica. Enjoyable.

holyshit. a quick serch found this ITEM:

Artist: [Driemanskap feat. Macho]
This cutting edge compilation brings together the voice of the Cape Town rhyme underworld - Ben Sharpa, Konfab, Rattex, Terror MC, The Archetypes and more, over Dplanet's thick slabs of underground hiphop, dubstep and grime.

This is the future of the African hiphop revolution..

And yeah early Associates has the same ice-cold expressionism as Travelogue, only Billy could sing lol.

this part i don't understand at all.

What's the feeling out 'there' regarding N-Dubz?

Shurely I Swear is one of the best pop tunes of recent times.

Their home-cooked exotic videos (Feva Las Vegas) and low-rent super slick production/composition are also rather endearing.

Haven't seen the vids, but liiked those above and Waste My Time too. The geezer's got a great voice and the tunes are undeniable (tho i reckon there's a few here who will:p) - if there were any justice etc etc.

Yeah the tunesmanship and composition (balancing of rapping/diva interludes/instrumental bits) is cracking - they should be a high-charting act.

Lo and behold pop song structure is something they look at closely:

I hear you have weird musical influences?
D: See that makes us different too; we've listened to Sting, The Police, Genesis, Duran Duran, George Michael for the longest time. Tracey Chapman, Phil Collins, Madonna, Chaka Khan, Michael Buble, Robin Thicke, Roachford. All these people inspire due to the fact of the vocal arrangements, the middle 8's, the crescendo's, the bridges. You go back to your laboratory and come back with dynamite.

the assosiates are really great. most of their albums have a pretty different sound so you cant really say for sure if someone will like one album cause they liked another one.

i personally like Perhaps alot, it doesnt seem to get much of a mention when people talk about them.

I luurve "Sulk". How does this compare?

Fourth Drawer Down is their singles that they were making off of demo money given to them by record companies (and then releasing the demos as independent singles) pre-Sulk days, though not their earliest singles which you can find on 'The Affectionate Punch' and 'Double Hipness'.

I think it's kind of a band just about to become famous, and just about to go pop; it sounds like they know they can do it but are still enjoying experimenting. The tracks are more austere, sparser than on 'Sulk', and without the cover versions which I never much cared for, even though 'Sulk' is amazing. It's less joyous and more baroque as a collected work...more Bergman than Fassbinder. It's become one of those records that I come back to as a barometer of...I dunno lol. Barometer of something, anyway. The synth sounds on it are to fucking die for.
