Contemporary South African music

I've noticed lots of references on Dissensus to contemporary music coming out of South Africa on - thought I'd try to group all future discussion here, cos the stuff that has been kindly uploaded/that I've managed to track down on recommendation, has been amazing.

More specifically, I'm talking kwaito (Brenda Fassie and numerous others I can't recall names of just now), Hymphatic Thabs on the hip-hop front, the 'South Africa in Dub' comp that Zhao put up.......

And I still don't really understand what Zulu House is, aside from being faster than kwaito...who are the artists to check?

just met a dj dude from Mozambique who promised to give me a primer on loads of new goings on. looking forward to that.

i haven't heard any Zulu House yet either, but another friend who was over there was talking about a kind of Afro-house that is generally slower than house, around 100-110 BPM... does that sound like Zulu?

Kwaito is about, 80bpm, isn't it? Slowish anyway. That's prob Zulu House. All I've managed to find are clips on Youtube that I don't think have very much to do with genuine South African music at all :slanted:

Please, stelfox, upload some! You've let hints drop here and there that you are sitting on a stash of this great stuff, straight from the source! Any chances of a lil' sampler of some of the ruffer sounds as development aid for the musical beggars?

I've got a mix a SAfrican friend burned for me... he said it was kwaito, but he generally is not very discerning when it comes to genres (I think this is true of the consumption of mixed music in many places, the taxonomy is left to the obsessives and the accountants, self included ;)). I'll see if I can find it, and if so I'll upload it... one track interpolates Journey's "Final Countdown"!
