Burial "Untrue"

And you're right Gek.

This one aches.

If I was in a better mood this might not seem as easy to get into.

The new one sounds like the perfect grey Monday morning sound track, I'm only on my first listen, but I'd agree it feels more substantial than the first one and I reckon it'll be more rewarding in the long term.
The vocal samples seem to make the links to 2 Step/Garage/DnB more apparent this time as well.

hmm some of it works and some of it doesn't just like the first record.
some of it emotes really nicely, some of it is just a bit lost, overlong and messy.
Not really sure if he is actually a really incredible producer or someone fairly competent who just has a strong idea of what he has in his mind and is committed to that.
I don't honestly think he's technically amazing at all but he's good at painting pictures, that's what he's amazing at abnd that's where some of this works, some of it is a bit sloppy though and just sounds a bit shit.

He's DEFINITELY an incredible producer as he has a sound which is totally his own. Of course it doesn't always work and there's some dullish tracks on both his albums, that's fair to say. But the extent to which it is virtually impossible for someone to come along and rip him off without sounding entirely derivative is indicative of the fact that he has developed a highly personalised, inimitable, immediately identifiable and rich sonic vocabulary, with a level of density and allusion missing from 99% of music. He's not a straightforwardly "dance" producer to the extent that his music isn't going to bang in a club setting, but that's hardly the point is it? The intricacies of his drumlines and denatured vocal patchworks alone indicate a producer with a highly evolved technical approach... and anyway, technique is hardly the be all and end all (tho I suspect you know that).

yeah that's pretty much my argument!
I just don't think he's quite there technically.

Who are you comparing him to exactly? And in what sense are you meaning technically here?

Actually the one thing I would seriously fault him on is structure above all else... though there's some more interesting stuff going on here on the new album than was the case with the debut... and the ambient pieces are much more ambitious and thought-through, and are far more emotionally affecting as a result...

On first listen this marks a definite improvement on the first album, which was fantastic but a little underwhelming considering the potential. The vocals on this one are just lush. Could even imagine something like Archangel being a crossover radio hit, god forbid. You can't say that about much other dubstep can you?

Off topic kinda (and mildy trainspotter-ish) but from the ILM thread on this topic they had a link to this mix: http://www.divshare.com/download/2553910-cde

Where the second track according to this... http://thisisnotanexitclub.blogspot.com/2007/10/i-got-up-sunday-morning-and-with-packet.html is an "unknown Burial remix"... it does kind of sound like Burial (incidentally its a remix of a bloc party track but you can only just tell that as the vox are inevitably heavily pitch shifted...)

So is this true or what (mild intrigue descends).

I've not heard that! Actually both of them are quite suitable in a weird way (albeit heavily edited) especially given their use of androgynous falsettos... Burial=genius just for being able to make a track from Bloc Party's absolutely dire second album sound like a thing of quietly magisterial grandeur and drama...

Reminds me of the promos for the last Luomo record which had a baby crying every 30 seconds over the tracks... it actually worked quite well!

I would say in terms of being a sound technician, he's not quite Pharrell, but I like what he does when he does it anyway.
