Hereos & Villians
Just wanted to say that I’m enjoying (the MP3 of) your tape hugely. I’ve listened to the first side twice so far and am enjoying side two right now as I type. It does make me thing though that tapes are so much better than MP3s. You have an object to have and to hold, to find down the back of the sofa in three years time and son. You also have a cover which I suspect helps keep on top of what’s what.
What I liked about it is that it is utterly unlike stuff I’d normally listen to, very different from the stuff that gets bigged up on here. I know very little about any music of Latin derivation, same with most Arabic, Indian and Middle Eastern musics, to my chagrin. So, it was a bit of a stretch for the ears. I also really like the way it had a consistent – theme? Mood? No, “vibe” is the right word, a thread joining it all together, even though you were moving through a range of different genres, styles, tempos, countries even. I see
I was going to attempt a track by track response but I got lost a bit listening to it on an MP3 without a tracklisting to hand. The fact it’s a mix meant I wasn’t sure exactly what was what after about 10 minutes into side 1 also. May return to this and give some more specific track by track reactions when I’ve re-listened somewhere I can takes notes, and figured things out a bit more. What stood out for me for me was the transition from the more mellow moods of the opening of side one to the more soundtracky moments – it all goes particularly crazy about 16 minutes in with what distinctly sounds like a toilet flushing and then things get really bugged out for a while. I like the transtion back and forth between the latin female vocal ("What is there to know?") and the echoing feedback which follows. Wasn't quite sure which track was which. Great stuff.
